Why can't solicitors or doctors have visible tattoo's???? Do we see them as less of a professional for having tattoo's or piercings???

For me anyway I have never been in a public facing role but I have often had customers come into the manufacturing area and have seen my tattoo's and Only ever got asked if they hurt when I had them done.

There is a stereotype that people with tattoo's get and they are truly unrealistic in my opinion as to whether you can do the job right or not.

Tattoos and rivets here, there and everywhere are simply fashionable amongst certain people - at the moment!
All it tells me is those indulging in inking their bodies and sticking bits of tin in them are nothing more than slaves to fashion, and easily swayed.

Bah i've had purple hair since 2007...so if i'm being fashionable that means i started the trend..!

To be honest when i wanted my lip done back in 2003, i knew only 1 other person who had it done, i had to wait til 2007 to get it done as a)6th form didnt allow them, 2)my then job didn't alllow them 3)my then bf didnt like them, by that point more people had it done but i'd wanted it done for so long that i was chuffed to get it.

I've been "alternative" in the way i look/dress for the last 10 years and i don't see me changing, its part of me now. Yes i'll disguise it if ui have not but i won't change who i am outside of that.

Also...more in the response to the poster who said people with pericings seem dodgy in some way-look at my avatar..do i really look like i'm about to mug you? :o

Well, they can have them BUT it's whether anyone will employ them and whether clients / patients will accept them.

It's all about the perception of the beholder.

For me, personally, I would be concerned about the personality of a doctor / solicitor with tattoos - I would want one with more conservative views.

I knew a young newly qualified solicitor who had a rose tattooed on her shoulder blade. The senior partner called her into her office, told her to put a jacket on as the tattoo was visible through her white shirt and told her that she would be expected to always wear clothing thick enough to prevent the tattoo from showing through. Some professions have certain 'values' and it is those that dictate whether the person will be employable or not.
    :hello:
  • I don't like them - it puts me right off a person I am afraid.

In my work I know no-one that has a visible tattoo or piercing.

Can anyone confess to ever seeing a doctor/lawyer/accountant/professional with a visible tattoo or piercing?

In many firms in the city even beards are frowned upon!

I had my first piercing in 1978 and my first tattoo in 1979, I also had died hair around that time. I didn't get a brand till I was in my 40s though.

Like it or not, people make judgments based on appearances... I expect a doctor to look a certain way, a banker another and a rugby player different again.

I personally do not like tattoos and piercings as I see them as disfigurements... but that is my opinion. Does my opinion cloud my view of strangers with said tattoos or piercings? If I'm honest, possibly...

So, you have to ask yourself why you feel you want to 'customise' the way you look as it is something you will have to live with forever... we are all different and some will view you differently with piercings / tattoos - that is human nature... but if you are content with wanting to change you looks then just be aware that it *may* change the way others see you.

What do you think of people with disfigurements then? A large burn on the face or a birth mark? I find that statement that it is a disfigurement offensive.

My brother is a fully qualified, senior pensions officer for a large firm in London and has been in this field for over 12 years and he is covered in tattoos. I know with his suit on you can not see them but thats a poor judgement to make of someone you do not know. As long as they do the job you have engaged them to do well I see no problem with it.
