Old tyres as building material.

Hi Guys

I have been looking into earthships as a way to build an eco-home but I am wondering if garages are allowed to let me have tyres or do I have to have some sort of permit?

I was thinking of starting off by building a wall in my garden to get used to ramming earth into the tyres and hone my skills at building before taking on anything more adventurous but I will need some tyres to start with.

Does anyone know please?

    Take a look at this:

    http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/waste/114455.aspx

May help you find out, but more importantly, gives you the Environmental legalities. If you have a local Haulage company, the larger the better, you could enquire from them who collects/where they deliver, used tyres. Also, do the same with local Tyre fitting companies. A large one such as KwikFit, would be best. Remember that the price for you to buy, may be expensive, as used tyres is a big business now. There are many products made from them today, as you will learn from the above website.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Which does beg the question of why consumers get charged a "disposal charge" when they have their tyres changed.

You pay them to take a valuable commodity away - could only happen under a "Green" economy!

Have a look in the back of "Farmers Weekly". There are usually ads for bulk deliveries old tyres in there.

When collecting waste from a business for my own personal use, I just give them a Waste Transfer Note.

It basically lists the waste item and the quantity.

A customer of mine was approached to take used tyres to South Africa, those with a bit of tread were still legal there, and those that were totally naff would be used as shoe soles.

You wouldn't believe the amount of faff he had to go though.

"Green" comppanies start off with good intentions, but then the government agencies get involved and it all gets mega-complicated.

I'm sure if you get a disposal chit signed off, they would let you have them for free, but they would probably want to know your intentions if you end up with 2000 used tyres, and your design project does not work out - what would you do with them if proper disposal costs £1 a piece?

    Thanks everyone for the input.

Sally I intend on building a wall first to get the skills I need then I would make a garden room so I wouldn't be wanting 2000 tyres straight up, thanks for the info though :)

This type of building has been done in Brighton and Fife and I am expecting other earthships to start popping up or a combination of tyre piers with straw bales on top.

Scotsman - yes the waste transfer note! I forgot about these.
