Most smaller garages and tyre places I know will gladly show you where the tyre skip is and invite you to come back when they're not there.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

OP. Flying-High's got a good point althoigh even someone involved in the tyre industry really doesnt know 100% what you need as a private individual.
I know 100% what I'm doings right. I've a waste management exemption (free) and I DO have a Carriers Licence (£150 odd for 3 years)even although others doing the same have it in writing from SEPA and the EA that it's not required (WTN satisfies companys legal requirement).
But it's got nothing to do with tyres.
Best bet is to email whatever agency you are under, lay out your plans/what you want to do and that you are a private individual, not a company/business (this makes the difference for what you can get away with) and see what they say.
I'd think the Brighton and Fife projects will be well publicised, perhaps email someone connected to those and see how they went about it?
Just to add, I wouldnt be offering to pay anything for the tyres just now, possibly even try to negotiate that they deliver them to you. This would also remove any possibility of you perhaps needing a carriers licence.0 -
A couple on Grand Designs ended up building in France as they had so much trouble trying to build using tyres in the UK.
I found that really funny as we have been battling French burocracy for years.0 -
@ Flying-High
I don't quite understand your post but got the eco part and had thought of contacting EA cos they can be worse than old bill.
@ Scotsman I will contact the two earthship sites to ask them how thye got hold of so many tyres I need to speak to planning as well as there's no point if they aren't open to eco-builds. I'm in SWales so will sound them out. I could do a mixture of tyre and straw bale so if they don't like the full tyre buildings they might go for a tyre/straw mixture. The straw bales need to bee about 18 inches above ground level anyway so they don't get wet so a small tyre wall would be ideal.
Thanks everyone.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -

What a fascinating project! I watched something similar on Grand Designs; they found that they had to get a team of volunteers in, as the work was very time consuming, but in exchange for food and learning these new skills people were happy to help. Perhaps this would be something that you could consider?
I'd love it if you would come back to update us on each step of this journey (although maybe the eco / green board would garner more interest)?
Much luck, anyway

Hi kittiej
I would definitely speak to your local planning department before you go any further with this. It sounds a fascinating project and I wouldn't want to put you off but I think you could well have difficulties getting planning permission. If you're in a built up area it the materials could be considered unsuitable/out of character and if you're in the middle of no where then it would still be a new building in the Green Belt and it's unlikely that being built of of recycled materials would be considered as 'very special circumstances'.
Peace

OP I may have given you a duff lead there as there are some hoops you will need to jump through now...
New Waste Tyre Regulations and the Farmer
