Gas Meter Replacement and Change of Supplier

G4s sent a letter to replace my meter because it is "at the end of its usable life" and "no longer certified for use". They sent this on behalf of my old supplier but I have recently switched (supply is now live).

Anyone offer any light on this? My meter was replaced in 2000 and is a schlumberger/actaris.

I know I should ring my current supplier but thought I should check here first just in case they don't know what for (paranoid? Moi? ;))

    Speak with your current supplier.

If the meter needs changing, then it needs changing whichever supplier you are with, but your current supplier should be taking care of this :)

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Meters are not always owned by suppliers. Suppliers simply rent meters from MAMS (meter asset managers). Dont worry about it and dont waste your time ringing.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Hi Flashnazia, it will be for a smart meter if you have had a metric meter installed in 2000, either that , or its a mess up. I have seen a lot of new metric meters just replaced by yet another metric for no good reason. double check with your supplier if its a smart meter, apparantly you have the option to refuse these new meters as the flat earthers think they are an intrusion upon their civil libertys.
I work for G4S as a meter reader and they have been obtaining contracts to fit smart meters

You could ignore it as others suggest.... especially if you are happy to be billed on a possibly inaccurate meter.

Or you could follow my earlier advice and ensure you continue to have an accurate meter recording your consumption :)

The letter doesn't say anything about smart meters. I suspect they want to change it because it might be one the models that were likely to be faulty. I do want it changed though as the governor (sp?) is a bit dodgy: when hot water is on (combi boiler) the cooker ring will lower a little (but not enough to be dangerous).

Anyway, we rang g4s who say there are no appointments in our area so we have to wait to be contacted again. They also said the change of supplier doesn't make a difference.

  • They dont seem to mention what type of meter its going to be switched to, they did nt when they replaced my meter to a smart, you would have to ask them if you intend refusing a smart. There are some possibly faulty installations of type J42 regulators which are screwed into the meters which G4S are also checking

What's so bad about a smart meter? I'm not bothered as long as it doesn't over-register!
