You really need to educate yourself. Margaret did not single out a race; therefore her comment wasn't racist. She didn't even moan about a citizens of a country; but that still may not be racism. French, Germans' and English moaning about each other, wouldn't be racism; because we are from the same race; Ayran race. You can look all this up on the internet if you were off sick for several weeks/months, when your primary school covered all this.

EDIT. Here you go Alison and those others of you who don't understand about races. It took me all of 2 seconds to find this on google.

I love it. BTW I have not bothered to read most of this thread, I have better things to do.

Racism is really the easiest of taunts to throw around. You also get it between Scots/English, Irish/Scots, Welsh/English (BTW the word 'Welsh' comes from 'waelsc', Old English for foreigner).

My cosmetic surgeon was born in India, qualified in Australia, now works in England. The last time I had surgery the anaesthetist was German and the surgical registrar was Romanian.

The mention of Malala is really yet another 'red herring'. This young lady is here for treatment, highly-specialised care which she couldn't get in her own country. She's been in the hospital where our badly-wounded soldiers go, so they have a lot of expertise in dealing with these traumatic wounds and injuries. As I understand it she is not an asylum-seeker nor an illegal immigrant. She's here for treatment and also, her father has a job here.

As regards any of the African countries, we've pumped millions in aid into Africa and where has it all gone? We've all paid into Africa - remember LiveAid, BandAid, all the others? One comment from Bob Geldof - he noted that 20 years after the African famine for which he helped to raise so much money, the population in the country had doubled. This is unheard-of. After the Irish potato famine the population never recovered, so how was this possible?

How is this small island supposed to take in all the people who might want to come, from any part of the African continent? We can't. About time we stopped trying.

Her father was given the job this week, it is for three years with a possibility of a further two years. It is a diplomatic job at the Pakistan Consulate so probably different rules about immigration status and visas etc. The whole family, father, mother and siblings are now living in Birmingham. As Malala and her father have been subject to death threats if they return to Pakistan I would think they would be able to claim asylum, I don't know what there immigration status is.

There is no doubt that they are a genuine asylum claim. The UK government chose to bring them to the UK, so that the girl could get the expert medical care she needed and her family get protection. No Brit will begrudge them this.We are happy to pay for them.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

They are. The UAE supplied the air ambulance and a medical team, Pakistan pays and will pay the rest: all medical fees and all other expenses.

About time we stopped trying to help Africa? Again I ask - is this your church's view?

Ask all you like. Or you could google 'aid to africa isn't working' and you will get 44,800,000 hits. Plenty for you to read on why giving aid to africa isn't working if you are really interested.

EDIT Here is an article about foreign aid, that is just a few hours old; if you really are interested.

    The great aid mystery

Our rulers must know that development aid doesn’t work. So why do they throw money at it?

Please ask on immigrationboards before your wife leaves the UK. She may be better waiting out the 10 years plus to get citizenship because from what you have told us, it could be nearly impossible for her to ever come back to the UK, should you or her British children want to live in the UK.

If you have the money to pay for her NHS births/any other treatment and can pay back any public funds she took, then the spouse visa will be the quickest route to citizenship (applied from her own country). It is now 5 years to citizenship on a spouse visa and you will need to be able to afford to sponsor her; earn £18,600pa. Ask about this on immigtaionboards. You aren't the only one who tried to get your spouse into the UK through the backdoor, but the rules have now changed and they will be able to give you the benefit of their experience.

our solicitor said something about a 7year rule (when our daughter turns seven to reapply for a spousal visa?) even past july this rule hasnt changed... i will find the info out - but im not sure exactly about it...
I'm still concerned about your wife's name being the main claimant for CTC. Being legal in the UK is not the same as being able to claim public funds. As you saw from Snooks list, CTC are public funds i.e. a visitor is legal in the UK, but they can't have public funds or free NHS.
my wife isnt the main claimant...

i was simply saying that she COULD be.

when we claimed, CTC I made the claim for CB, although *she can* i did it for the ease and to avoid the hassles.
the same went for CTC etc however the money is paid into her bank to be spent by her on the kids.

I have read that part now. But on page 4 it states

    b) My partner is allowed to claim tax credits
    - can I claim them too?

Claims for child and working tax credits are
assessed jointly. If you are living with a spouse
or partner who is allowed to claim tax credits,
your name may be included in the claim.

It's the "included in the claim" that they talk about on immigrationboards. You're allowed to claim tax credits and your wife is included in the claim: which means you claim more welfare for her; or less if she works too. It doesn't say she can claim them (as the main applicant) just that she is included in your claim.

but you claim as a couple... me being named as the main applicant or partner has no effect... a couple is of equal standing... so naming either party doesnt increase the importance of either party etc...
