Gammon for sandwiches

Options
I've bought a joint of gammon to use for sandwich meat. Do I roast it or do I boil it? Is it the best joint to use for sandwich meat?

Thanks.

I do mine in the SC and it is perfect every time. I like it cooked in plain water but you can add honey/maple syrup/peppercorns/bay leaves etc.

If you don't have a slow cooker, I would boil it :)

  • Thanks for posting these links to those other threads.

I've got it on the cooker now, boiling away. I've just chucked an onion in there with it; nothing exciting but it might give it a bit more flavour.

Fruball, I don't have a SC but it's one of those things I keep thinking of investing in. People on this board certainly seem to get a lot of use out of them.

I use mine a lot. Mine is just a tesc0 one which was about £12! perfect size for me and 2 kids with enough to freeze too.

I cook whole chickens in mine for taking apart and using in other things - the meat just slides off the bones!

But my favourite thing to do is the gammon - I love it sliced up with pickles and toast or in sandwiches, or with mash and parsley sauce! I tried the gammon in cola once - never again - I didn't like it at all!

    Enjoy :)

You can do in slow cooker then finish off for 20 mins in oven with glaze of your choice (remove most of fat first) - we just smear marmalade but honey and mustard or any sweetish flavour would work I reckon. Good luck.
  • The local big tesco's are selling slow cookers, three litre ones for £8.00 at the moment
  • We had gammon on Boxing Day - a lovely smoked joint. On Christmas Eve my dad boiled it with an onion, a few peppercorns and a bay leaf and then we let it cool before keeping it in the fridge until it was needed. It was beautiful, so much so bf and I bought some home to make sandwiches!

Boiled it slightly longer than he initially wanted but it's beautiful, falls apart when cut and melt in the mouth - perfect.

Plus the stock created when boiling it has made my parents a glut of pea and ham soup :)

I found this thread just in time. I did a couple of gammon joints in my SC only yesterday, one ordinary the other smoked. I wish i'd known i could have done them in Coke. But i never realised i could use the stock, i don't like throwing things like that down the sink so it was in an old marg tub and wrapped-up in the pedal bin last night. Just in time it's now in the freezer until next time i make soup.

  • To make the most of a gammon joint I start it off in a saucepan of cold water bring it slowly up to the boil then get rid of the water. Then add fresh water and cook as normal. This gets rid of some of the salt and means I can use the gammon water in soups, etc. without it being too salty. I also saute finely shredded cabbage with a knob of butter & a ladel of gammon stock which makes a great side dish for the gammon.

I bought a carton of Bolognaise sauce and on the list of ingredients was ham stock. The sauce was lovely and I've meaning to add a ladle or two the next time I make it.
