I use astonish oven cleaner to get the stains off my very old cast iron bath as the enamel surface was so worn away when I moved in it looked awful.

I had nothing to lose doing it since it was about to be replaced. I saved myself £300 as I kept it, all for a pound shop cleaner :)
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

old toothbrushes, use in the bathroom and kitchen for cleaning taps, awkward bits of the hob, tile grout and the 'pleat' in the fridge seals - perfect for cleaning the awning channel on the caravan too. One caution - do mark your cleaning brushes clearly so they don't get mixed up by other members of the family when they're too sleepy in the mornings to work it out!

I use old toothbrushes for cleaning too, but I don't keep them where people might mistake them for usable ones. On Jeremy Vine the other day they were talking about couples who share a toothbrush  A few people phoned in to say they had been accidentally using the dog's toothbrush  Though why you would keep your dog's toothbrush in with the family's ones I don't know.

Loving some of these tips. I bet the cake stand looks really pretty in a bedroom!

I use toothbrushes for cleaning too but got 2 for 10p in A$da instead of using old ones and risking getting muddled up :p

I use conditioner instead of shaving gel - works better imo, is cheaper and don't need to moisturise after :D

I use a punch bowl as a fruit bowl as it's bigger.

I use glass food storage jars in the bathroom filled with cotton buds/cotton wool balls etc. I think it looks quite stylish :)

Oh and toothpaste polishes up stainless steel really well. Bought some value brand toothpaste especially!

I use the lid of an old Ferrero Rocher box to keep next to the oven to rest spoons/spatulas in while cooking.

Like 20somethinghousewife, I don't use shaving gel, I use baby oil. You only need a teeny little bit and it gives a lovely smooth shave with moisturised legs after!

  • I use a soft bristle artist's brush for cleaning rings - with soapy water. Clean the back of the stones with soap and water, rinse and then give them a quick boil (a couple of minutes) in water with a spot of wahing up liquid and cloudy ammonia (if you have it - I use a touch of white vinegar if not). Rinse them in boiling water, then leave on kitchen roll to dry. Don't boil pearls or opals, though - these need gentle treatment!

Very effective, and a lot cheaper than jeweller's prices!

Does this work really well? I have an old bath which is stained and it annoys me as it always looks as if it is dirty:(

Toothpaste is awesome for getting off cooked-in stains from the cooker too. Just squirt some out, spread it in and wash it off like half hour later.

Asda SP toothpaste & SP toothbrushes are fab for cleaning jewellery - you can get into all the little crevices and it's not too abrasive!
