I can hear live tv when watching a recording?

I'm using a quite-old Pansonic box with built in hard-drive to watch and record tv. It is connected up to a Hitachi TV.
The problem I am having is that when I am watching something I have recorded, I can hear whatever is on live tv playing in the background! It is fainter than whatever is playing, but is still very audible and is VERY annoying and distracting!
Can anyone think what could be causing it? I've used it before with this TV in my old house and never noticed the problem before so I feel like I must have messed up a setting somewhere or something.
I can try and find exact model numbers if that is any help.

Not enough info; which Pana box, which TV?
How have you got them connected up?
Is there any external audio component, any HiFi or Home Cinema connection, or are you using the TV sound exclusively?0 -

TV - Hitachi 19LD5550U
Box- Pansonic DMR-EX77
They're connected via SCART.
Just using the TV sound

I've heard of poorly shielded SCART cables causing similar issues.0

I have no idea what that means :rotfl: What would the solution be if that was the case?0 -
Yep that'll be the problem, crosstalk in the scart cable, try using better quality shielded scart cables or a cheap option is to disconnect the audio output wires on the scart plug that goes into the TV.

scart sockets have input and output connections, DMR77 signals are fed into the TV scart socket, at the same time the TV scart socket is outputting the last viewed TV channel even though the TV is set to now selected to view the scart input, such as 'AV1'....this outputted audio and video can bleed across the cables in the scart lead and get fed back into the TV on wires going into the TV's scart.
confused?
You can usually cure this by modifying the plug that goes into the TV, open it up, locate the wires that go to pins 1,3 and 19 and cut them or remove the pins, then tape up each cut/pulled wire/pin so it can't touch anything else. That should solve it. A decent shielded cable is the other option.... or finally you could try switching the TV to a non working TV channel before then viewing from the DMR77

Can I suggest the first thing to check is that the SCART cables are undamaged (no pins bent flat) and are fully plugged into their sockets.
SCART plugs have a nasty habit of coming half-out of the socket at the slightest wiggle of the cable. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Swap the SCART lead for starters. A new one costs a pound upwards. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
