...I don't have any other pension so when the time comes I will have to see if we can get any help with the rent etc. I don't know how I can find out what we would be entitled to if I gave up work as it goes against you if you give up voluntarily I would have thought...

Make an appointment with your local CAB - they can do a 'better off' calculation which will tell you what your position would be if you left work.

are you getting working tax credits?

Why is your son on JSA and not on ESA? Carers allowance can be paid if your husband/son is on Mid Rate Care or above.

    Thank you for the reply.

I cant get working tax credits, we applied and got told we qualified but only for '£4.80p, and as this is less than the amount we normally pay out you will not receive this payment'.
    Brilliant!!!

Son is on JSA as now he is looking for work and is deemed fit.
Hubby is only on the lower rate of DLA. He applied for the higher rate as he cant stand without massive pain but was turned down as he 'can walk 50 yards' even though it takes forever and is extremely painful!!!

DLA is based on as system of points and as far as I know the measure is "able to walk fifty yards without pain or severe discomfort". See here https://www.gov.uk/dla-disability-living-allowance-benefit/overview

You might get this part of DLA because when using your normal aid you:
    • can’t walk
    • can only walk a short distance without severe discomfort
    • could become very ill if you try to walk
    • You might want to speak to your doctor and occupational therapist, you will need their support for an appeal.
    • You may a get better response to this subject on the disability forum.

Sorry, I was confusing the issue there!
He gets the mobility part at the reduced rate because of the walking thing but in order to be able to claim a carers allowance he would need to be on the mid or higher rate for his care needs.

The fact that he can wash, dress himself and make himself a drink means he dosnt get the rate.

If his only issue is walking, then I believe he will be unlikely to qualify for middle or higher rate DLA. There are people with worse disability who have been able to find work - with help. I would suggest you get advice.

Thanks Missile. I wish it were that simple, the walking is just part of it. He would give anything for a job as he has always been a very hardworking proud man but there are a lot of associated symptoms along with the walking which make it impossible.

He absolutely hates the fact that Im having to work while he is at home believe me, its not through his choice.
