Which Model and where to best buy American Style Fridge Freezer

I need a new Fridge Freezer, and it needs to be big so I can cram the whole weeks shopping into it.

I think this would be environmentally friendlier and cheaper in the long run than to get 2 to 3 tesco deliveries a week.

But there are so many and some are way too expensive so I would like your input as to which model to buy or to avoid like the pest. And also who sells the cheapest and also delivers it to my doorstep.

It will be standing in my diningroom as there is no space in my kitchen. So would prefer a frostfree model but it does not need to have this icemaking facilities or drinks dispensor. I just need the space and should be easy to defrost and energy efficient.

What ye say?

Thanks!

I got a Samsung sort of brushed graphite grey colour, I like it.

It has a snazzy water & ice dispencer, you can have it crushed or cubed.

You get a filter with it & next time buy compatabiles from ebay, as the Samsung ones are very expensive.

Was about £800 or £900, but I think they are coming down all the time.

Just one word of warning, measure your doorways before you buy. Lots of people fall into the trap of buying American appliances then having to remove doors or windows to get them in :)

    Door are easy enough, windows:eek:

My house has "normal" doors & entrance hall, I had no probs. But the doors DO come of the fridges to slim them a bit.
  • Take a look at Trade Appliances web site.
I got a great deal on my AEG Integrated fridge.
    Service was first class.

You can also get them through quidco which I did not know at the time I bought mine.

Do yourself a huge favour if you go down this road...

Steer well clear of the Korean ones, we get loads of troubles with them and especially LG and Daewoo, loads of hassle getting spares let alone technical info, even as repair agents.

My advice is that, if you want a Yankee fridge, buy a proper one and not a cheap imitation as it will prove cheaper in the long run. Many old Maytags we still see after 15-20 years service, but if you're gonna splash out the money you're far better to get that as they are a pain to change if needed.

You will also find that many of the brands have them made by LG or Samsung, just look at the price ticket and, if it seems too cheap then you pretty much know it's Far Eastern.

A good Yank fridge budget for at least £1000 up to (IIRC) about £6-7K for a totally unburstable Viking machine. Don't be duped by the stainless steel option as that adds bucketloads to the price, so again if it seems to good to be true, it likely is. If you can live with a black machine there's a few decent Maytag's for just under a grand.

    Hope that helps.

Several Moneysavers complained about noisey Samsung models (if you do a search it'll show up) no probs with ours though.

But REALLY miss ours, had to leave it at the old house, when we moved. Chilled water & ice maker are NOT a gimmik - we made proper use of these features.

However DON'T expect there to be much more real useable storage stace, they aren't that much bigger than 1/2 & 1/2 style fridge freezers.

& as to best place to buy, watch Currys/Dixons/Comet try to out do each other, when one of them has an offer & you'll be down to £600 ish + delivery.

Also don't ignore Whirlpool models, they seem to be getting cheaper too!

Yeah the cheap Whirlpool ones are made in Italy and they have, err, issues. ;)

Thanks for your input so far. I want to buy an american style one, not an american one per se. I just need the space, reliability and economy of a very large fridge freezer.

    Hi BullDog,

Have a look at the Maytags, you can pick up some cheap.

The reason for posting really though is, if you can, hold off as I am told today that Samsung are about to release a new range that is supposed to cure the issues we've had with the ones that around at the moment. ;)
