Converting Cassette Tapes to MP3

I need to convert a load of old cassette tapes to MP3. I did a few a couple of years ago using AUDACITY. However, as technology may have moved on since then, there may now be some better software out there.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

  • Audacity is still the best in my opinion. You will also need LAME to export the recording as an MP3.

    Thanks for the prompt response.

The link to LAME on the page to which you referred me is alas broken (or at least currently inoperable). Any suggestions for a good alternative? It says "Lame v3.99.3 for Windows.exe". I've had a look at some sites and they appear to contain older versions, and I'm wary of downloading from sites that are not familiar to me.
  • I would only download LAME from there myself ( cautious)...seems the site is down right now, try again later/ tomorrow maybe.

I got an Envivo cassette to mp3 converter from Aldi earlier in the month, comes with audacity, works well, was only £12.99, apparently you can use audacity to convert from youtube to mp3, but I can't get that to work :( , it looks like it's recording, but when playing back there is no audio to be heard :(

Use WWW.SNIPMP3.COM to rip YT audio into MP3.

It works fine. Just make sure that the input is set to your computer soundcard. Your's might be set to the microphone input instead of soundcard input by mistake.

Set it with - Edit tab, Preferences, Devices, Recording. You can set it up as well using the options at the top of the screen using the microphone drop down menu.

Assuming you still have a cassette deck from when you did those a few years back, Audacity still seems to rule the roost.

If you don't have the cassette deck, I'd suggest a decent used one from eBay would be a better prospect than the mp3 converters.

A damn fine program is audacity. I use for all sorts of things. And I'm not even getting close to scratching the surface of it's capabilities. It's my photoshop of the audio world.

I can't even get it to work for tapes. The options for the 1st device setting are "Microsoft sound mapping output" and "speakers (realtek high definiti" and the 2nd device setting, "Microsoft sound mapper input" and "microphone (realtek high defini)".

The thing worked the other day and we're sure there was a setting closer to what the manual said if not exactly:mad:
