I believe many years ago in bradford the coppers were going to get sponsored cars, until they found out the supplying dealer only had registrations ending in PYG.

If a car dealer selling a new car won't change the reg number, then he is just being bone idle and can't be bothered. There is no way a proposed reg number can't be changed before a car is registered. Like others have said, most new car buyers get shown a list of numbers and are asked to select one from the list. Every Ford I've bought new has used that system. That has always been my experience.

I've always wondered if anyone ever had P155 OFF

Victor Meldrew had P155 OLE in one episode. His wife referred to it as a "pornographic number plate" :rotfl:

You can actually in 2005. The prefix are now 2 letters representing the area of registration. The next 2 digits represent the year of registration.

So Pep is perfectly correct!

Apparently if you order a new car and it will be on a 13 plate, the dealers are giving you the option to have it on a 62 plate

Nope Pep and you are wrong, "PI" is not a valid Local Memory Tag. The only valid tags starting with "P" are:

    P Preston A B C D E F G H J K L M N O P R S T Carlisle U V W X Y

Ok I stand corrected. But it is irrelevant anyway as it was back in 1996 when I was interested in P155 OFF

    Precisely :)

The letter "I" is not valid in any part of the registration due to the potential for it to be mistaken for "1". This was the case under the old system and is still the case now.

(Northern Ireland has a different system and can include the letter "I".)
