Indeed iirc they usually try to ensure offensive plates aren't issued

Not now they're not! Now they're trying to sell them for mega money. I saw an article the other day saying they're trying to sell offensive number plates for upwards of £80k. Bit of a **** considering they've taken a few back from people over the last few years who paid for them - only for them to try and sell them for ridiculous amounts a year later after saying they won't allow them to be used.

@Op: DVLA reckon they are gonna start selling offensive number plates for £Mega. If it were me, I'd be checking to see if your new plate can be sold as I reckon you might be able to make a few quid on it (although it might be a non transferrable number).

DVLA would have provided a list of VRMs to the dealer, the dealer will then have allocated a specific VRM to a particular vehicle.

Last time bought a Ford I was shown a list of VRMs and could chose which one I preferred.

Every new car I have bought I have chosen from a limited list. As Tadley says each dealer gets a list of registrations from their local DVLA office. When I bought my last car (last September) the Fiat dealer in Coventry phoned me up and told me my reg, so I could arrange insurance. I said can't I choose my reg then? Reluctantly they agreed I could.

When I went in to sort out final details I was shown the list and chose a slightly better reg. I also asked if I could have a look at my car. When I went out to the car it already had a number plate on (they had wanted me to take it early on an 11 plate rather than a 61) ... so they had allocated me an 11 plate without asking what i wanted. So seems that some garages don't like offering a choice.

So tell them you want to choose ... you are paying a lot of money and it makes no difference to them which car has which reg - they just give the details to the DVLA.

As above when i ordered a new car. I got a choice of registrations.

    Is it a pre-regged car?

If it is clearly and legibly offensive, you should be able to make some money on the registration!

    What is it?

He said new for delivery in the New Year so I wouldn't have thought so

I work in a main dealer (non Ford) and I am an AFRL operator, short for Automated First Registering and Licensing System, a system which is used by most manufacturers and their main dealers that have been approved. As an AFRL operator we cannot issue a registration mark until a vehicle has a chassis number. Once it has we can then select from a range of marks. This can be aborted at any time prior to registration and a new mark issued. I suggest you tell the sales person to change it, if you really find it so offensive.

Have you been asked to sign a ‘Confirmation of Registration Details’ form?

I don't think so as I remember reading a news article many years ago about that registration, if it was issued I think it was recalled soon after.
