    Evengreener = £15 inc P&P for 3x 600g refills = £8.33 per kg
    Recyclenow = £9 inc P&P for a 3x 300g refills = £10 per kg
    Wrigglywigglers = £14.50 inc P&P for a 2kg bag = £7.25 per kg

    any more ?
  • farmerbrown.co.uk is p&p free over £35.00 so cheapest deal is:
    £30.00 for 5kg + £7.00 for 1kg = £37.00 for 6kg = £6.17 per kg

    Just checked Wrigglywigglers:
    £63.00 inc p&p for 20kg = £3.15 per kg

    I read up a lot about DIY bran manufacture and a shelf life of one year was recommended so i will stick to that, for us that means 2.5kg per year max.
    It would be interesting to know what the suppliers above suggest though.

    Bit depressed after reading all this as I have just bought a bokashi bin from Tesco Home and wear for £12.50 with 600g of bokashi. I was wondering about getting another one but think it might be too much of an investment judging by the experiences on the thread.:eek:
    However, I am starting to use it and thought if anyone else was interested then £12.50 is a good price.
  • Hi all,

    I have really enjoyed reading everyones comments about the bokashi bins. I bought mine along with a wormery with some money I got for my birthday last month.

    This morning I went along to my local Farmers Market, there is a woman there who regularly has a stand from the local council about recycling. The Maidenhead area are offering a free compost bin at the moment. I asked her about the smell of the bokashi, as the smell does seem to linger when the lid is off. I am putting everything in except tea bags (the worms love them, which should be ripped open before being put in the compost bin, something to do with the material used doesn't compost that quickly.)

    She assured me that the Bokashi should smell a bit like fermenting cider. The smell was pretty heave making the other day, I have added a bit more bran and made sure that I press it down firmly with the tool provided for the job, which I hadn't done and made sure that the lid is always on firmly, which it wasn't once. It wasn't that bad a smell today.

    I believe that bones won't totally compost but they will be clean, cooked ones can go in a wormery too. If they haven't totally decomposed when you come to empty your compost bin then throw them back in, the heat will eventually help to rot them down.

    To those thinking of giving up do persevere, it's all in a good cause and the results in the garden will be fantastic.

    I hope I have been of some help.

    We have had ours for a few months now and the first one contains just about everything - bones etc and doesnt smell at all. I only noticed this when her indoors forgot to put the lid on one day :eek: it was off for hours in the kitchen before i noticed and put it back on. Then i realised there was no smell which suprised me a great deal. Must be working i guess :o
  • I ordered some bokashi bran a few days ago. I got my bokashi bin from the recyclenow website, I had previously bought a compost bin from the same site and both were made by Blackwall. On the bokashi instructions leaflet there is an order form for the bran, 3x600g for £10. There was no mention of postage charge so I called the ordering number. As my local council is signed up on the recyclenow site, the postage was free!! That's £5.55 per KG for a 6 month supply.

    Must add my twopennoth i was using Bokashi bins for a couple of years doing everything right made a purpose built squasher when bin was full leaving for a couple of weeks then adding too the compost everything was going well untill a couple of months ago when i found i had rats in the compost bin and where i had been digging it into the ground with the compost (it had all rotted in well) ratty would plough it up again i think they were attracted to to the bran as much as anything else as i believe it is used as chicken feed as well so apart the smell i haved stopped using the bins! so that is my findings with Bokashi for what is worth

  • I ordered bran from Recycle Now over a month ago. It has still not arrived. When I phoned they said that it had been out of stock till a few days ago. Although they had my phone number, email and street address, no-one had been in touch to explain the delay. I am now told that delivery 'should be within a week', but no promises.

    As it happens we have the builders in so we've temporarily stopped cooking 'real food', which has dramatically reduced the amount we have to compost. But in normal circumstances a month without bran would be a problem. I won't be using Recycle Now in future.
