Nope, ours is definitely not a sweet, fermenting smell. It's putrefaction. Bleuchhh!Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

Is it worth leaving some boiling water with bicarbonate of soda in overnight to attempt to remove the smell?
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I might just do that tomorrow as the product is quite acidic, but I'll try just hot water in case the whole thing warps and doesn't seal anymore!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0

Update on my bokashi - I haven't restarted a bin since my last post, but yeaterday I turned over my compost heap and the compost in there was lovey, totally rotted down and not smelly at all. Strangely though there was an intact orange in there not mouldy or anything. I did find chicken bones among it - I was sceptical whether they'd rot down at all, I mean the time team dig up bronze age rubbish pits full of bones all the time!!
So anyway I might give it another go but not put any bones in in the future. I need a cheap supplier of the bran now.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
We've recently stopped using the bokashi bran in ours, I really couldn't tolerate the stench. We just use the bins as kitchen caddies now - will try scattering the remaining bran in the main compost bin, but won't be buying any more.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

I'm sure I saw an offer for 3 bags for £10 including postage, but alas I can't find it. Does anyone know where I can get it reasonably priced please?
Thank you.July Win: Nokia 58000 -

Argh £5 postage
Why do the councils give the buckets away/sell 'em cheap, and then not subsidise the bran? I wonder how many people will give up when they realise the cost?
Thank you for the links!July Win: Nokia 58000 -
3 for £10 (£9 after web discount) and free postage at http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/
It's not easy to find - you have to enter your post code in the 'get a low cost compost bin' box, which takes you to a page about compost bins available in your area. Look for a link on that page to 'additonal bins': this takes you to a page of specialist bins. Bokashi bran is right at the bottom of that page. Good luck!0
