  • I ordered the bokashi bran from bubblehouse worms and it was the correct weight. The lady on the phone was very helpful and friendly and it arrived quickly. It was in a large plastic lidded bin to keep it dry. You can order refills from them which works out cheaper, so if you have a suitable container you can order just the refills.

The cheapest I could find last December for the actual bins was on ebay from Used2Bee http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLACKWALL-kitchen-composter-PK2-recycle-food-waste_W0QQitemZ150300608318QQihZ005QQcategoryZ98850QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

They do not call it a Bokashi bin in a search but a Blackwall kitchen composter. I have no connection with them but was pleased with the bins, the speed of delivery etc. They charge £39 for two bins with £6.50 for postage so much cheaper than the £70 odd which other people have seen them at.
  • I got mine via the recyclenow website - double starter set £23 including deliv Sept last year
they are now £38 including delivery

  • I got my 5kg bag from bokashibucket and weighed it, and it was correct

    saraseahorse
I ordered 3kg bag from a website and weighed it when it arrived after reading this thread
1.6kg . . awaiting reply from the company - I shan't name them yet as they haven't had chance to sort problem out yet . . .

you should name and shame, 1.6 kg is totally disgusting, and a complete rip off from the company that supplied it.
let us know who it was.
  • thye have investigated and sent out correct replacement - their response was rapid and customer service very good - I assume it was a one off as they have not had this problem before

  • hello, i have been and made my own bokashi bran and successfully sold it on ebay, i also sold a kit to make your own too. i don't sell it anymore as the weather changed and a lot of poeple were buying off someone else but you can make your own very easily and if your used to homebrewing its even easier than that! the first time is going to be the most costly but after that you won't be needing much only bran. the only bad experience was when i didn't keep the bran in a airtight container and mine went mouldy. i bokashi'd it lol. i am still making bokashi bran and fermenting with two bins and two recycled tarmac containers that i scrounged i made a grid in the bottom with some wire mesh and cut a hole out the side so the liquid could still run out and they work fine. i do scrub them clean everytime and after all this time i'm still as happy as i was when i started and quids in! i don't smell anything until part of the bins are emptied into the wormery some i buried and i can honestly say the worms are like snakes they are massive. i bokashi'd loads of onions and onion skins and they can't get enough. i put ordinary potato skins in and they started to evacuate the wormery (wilko stackable boxes) so i'm just going to give them all the bokashi they want but it has to be fermented bokashi not dry bokashi bran.
  • i only sold small bags of bokashi never more than 1.5kg so please don't think it was me that undercut i always went over the scales incase it settled in transportation.

Thats very considerate of you, but somehwat invalid because volume doesent represent weight; 1.5kg is 1.5kg however settled a bag might be.

Im just about to get a bucket so I will bear in mind what has been said here. It sounds like some people havent been following the instructions as rigourously as they should, but I realise this is an entirely natural process reliant on temp, moisture, quality of bran etc so the scope for variation is huge
  • I am about to get my can o worms going again, and I'm also considering getting bokashi bins (£25 for 2 via Essex Council).

I don't have space for a compost bin so I was wondering if I could put the fermented bokashi into the wormery? Is there anything I shouldn't put in if I do this?

    Thanks

  • Yes, or you can dig it straight into the border.

  • Ive had bokashi for years.
when peeling veg i used to put it all into the magimix, whiz it up into stiny bits then empty into the bokashi. my reason were it broke down very quickly.
ANY food, be it cooked or raw went in also.
hair, pet hair, tea bags, coffee gind all can go in.
It does STINK, mine were outside.
Empty it into the compost bin.
The bokashi WILL peed up the compost process inside ur compost bin. If uve ever felt the heat coming from the compost bin well do notice the heat will be hotter and for longer with the bokshi emptied into it.
Even though bones etc are in ur bokashi then in ur compost bin its still fine to go into ur garden once the compost cycle is finished. due to the heat produced it should break down any plant diseses etc
the water stuff form the bokshi tap is liquid gold for the plants. Dont use on veg/fruit plants
