I got paid more than that as a mechanic. Working for myself I'd be wanting at least £30/hr.

Do you get a guarantee with those two ?

Unless you were running a garage in a prime location, i dont think you'd be able to get £30 out of it. On a 40 hour week, that would be £1200. Certainly not round here anyway.

No issues with guarantees. Very rare any issues, but happy enough to 'have another look'. One of the guys is in his 50's and has been a mechanic for 30 years or so. The other guy is maybe early 30's. Ten years experience. He has all the Snap On kit for fault diagnosis too.

I dont think theres any justification in paying more than £20 an hour, unless you're physically going to a garage / full indy.

I alternate between two local guys who bother charge £10 an hour. They both work from their respective homes - one has a custom built garage with a lift that holds four cars at any one time, the other uses just his garage and has a lift fitted in that.

Both would be more than capable of the job in question. I got a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate fitted to a Meriva there recently for £450 all in. They both use a local motor factors that i know to be good, and reasonably priced. For an oil and filter service with pre-mot check i paid £40 last week on a zafira.

I guess its down to where you live though. Certainly in or around a city you're unlikely to get rates like that, but still certainly worth pricing around.

Its not just down to where you live but also finding people like the guys you use. What would be the going rate in a garage in your area as I suspect your guys are the exception rather than the rule.

Most of the small independants in my area charge about £20-25 per hour, the majority are struggling for work aswell.

I can think of a couple of home set ups similar to what Paul mentioned but never use them so not sure what they charge.
  • it shows on line that the fiesta 1.4 tdci was fitted with both types of clutches so it may not have the dmf !, why not ask some small garages for a price thats the only way to get a genuine price for it all,
i had a new clutch kit fitted in our polo sdi a few months ago £89.00 for the clutch kit borg & beck and £130 for fitting.

Yes, though worth checking out your own local area, as i dont think on a 'Money Saving' site we should be setting the bar at £50 as being a favourable rate.

If £20-£25 an hour is what you're seeing and the work is of decent quality then thats still a lot better than the £50 an hour being bandied about here as 'the norm'.

I was previously paying that sort of rate, but through asking around i've come across a couple of guys now who i can rely on and are cheap - a worthwhile combination to seek out.

Never had any reason to question the quality of work, I will say though where I live you can get a good size 4 bedroom detached for 200k and the average wage is probably more like 20k per annum, so the garages have probably got a limit to what they can get away with charging.
