I was talking to a VERY EXPERIENCED AND KNOWLEDGEABLE engineer yesterday. He has worked on oil rigs and with outfits drilling for gas ALL over the world - he is about to retire.
He mentioned that lots of our north sea gas has been sold off to other countries as we all know.
But what I didnt know and havent heard of before is that they (whoever they are) are drilling for WATER in the Arcitic!!

Now why on earth would someone be drilling for water - and why in the ARCTIC???

Well, the Arctic is floating, so they don't really need to drill for water there, they could just stand still and wait!

However, they are drilling for water in the Antarctic. It's a research project looking for life (or whatever) in an underground lake....

Shell are looking to drill for oil in the Arctic. Their plans are
on hold - for now - due to massive opposition!

Could this be what your engineer was referring to?
  • No - it was definitely water. Its up to you - believe it or not - just passing it on, it wasnt to test samples it is to actually drill for water.

Perhaps we should be asking the question why?

I was completely convinced once I saw you had put the engineer's experience in CAPITAL LETTERS.

As almost everyone who can recognise a screwdriver or a spanner calls themselves an "Engineer", I wouldn't place too much standing in those so called qualifications
Unless of course, he is actually registered with the Engineering Council as a PROPER Engineer.

Depends on what you mean by the 'Artic'. The icy bit around the North Pole might float, but a lot of the Artic is solid ground and people actually live there; eskimoes and such like, you know. Since people live there, and people drink water, it wouldn't be that surprising if someone had drilled for water.

I imagine that's why there is a company called Artic Drilling Inc which claims to be "the top leader in the water well drilling industry, with combined experience of over 75 years" and has been "Serving Alaska Statewide Since 1989".

He wasn't talking about the british expedition that was trying to drill into a lake 3km below the surface?

It has been isolated for god knows how long due to the nature of the landscape.

Anyway it failed / was abandoned as the drill went caput.
