petrol stations

I've noticed that for most of this year it's been near impossible to put the exact mount of petrol in your car, it's always £20.01 or £40.01. The gauge goes £19.95..96..97..98..99....20.01. I thought it was me but it happens to loads of people i know .

Good thing the half penny coin has gone? There was a good Not the Nine O'clock news sketch which featured an attendant pressing the half p button every time someone had spent a lot of time getting it to the exact amount.0

Bearing in mind most people pay by card these days, its always confused me as to why people seem to be bothered about getting an even amount. I always just fill up and pay whatever it has come to when the delivery clicks off.

And while I'm at it, why do people (aka my dad) drive miles and liles out of their way to get fuel a penny a litre cheaper. I swear my dad will hapily drive 20 miles to a petrol station he knows is a penny cheaper, and he thinks he is saving money:rotfl:

A good trick if you hit say £20.01, give the cashier £30 and say you have no change.
9 times out of 10 the cashier will give you pay the £10 note, although you get the odd silly cashier giving you pay £9.99 in coinage0 -

I suppose if you're that short of money you desperately need that penny then go or it!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Many of the petrol stations I use have a set of little buttons on them that allow you to enter the amount in £10/5/1 amounts so I can always put just £30 in as it stops on that amount.0

If the pump meter measures down to 10ml (about 1/3rd of a fluid ounce) increments then charges the price per 10ml for each increment (maybe 1.45p) which is then rounded, there may well be some cash amounts that are actually impossible to register.
If 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ml work out as 1.45p, 2.90p, 4.35, 5.80, 7.25p then rounded it's 1p, 3p, 4p, 6p, 7p - impossible to show 2p, 5p etc.
Mind, the local Esso has the 'take a penny' pot for these exact moments ;-)0 -
It's just because the price of petrol is so high - each drop costs more so it's harder to dispense an exact amount because the tiniest squirt costs a few pence rather than just one.0
