I have recently bought a clio. i am only 18 and was going to have my dad as the main driver on the insurance. my dad says he cant do this as he needs to be the registered keeper of the car to be the main policyholder rather than me. ive heard different stories everywhere and am wondering if i could be the registered keeper, with my dad the policyholder of the insurance?

I always thought you could, but with Direct Line you can't. I couldn't tell you if its the same for other companies.0

If you crash under your dad's insurance and they find out you own the car (which they can and do) they will not pay out and you'll get done for having no insurance. Not worth it; just get your own insurance!
Sorry I didn't answer your question but you should really think hard about going down that route!0 -
ive priced my own insurance, itl work out at about £1900, and on my dads about £700.would it not be worthwhile registering the car into my dads name and doing it that way, or would i still get raped with the insurance if i crash?0

How is your insurance that high??!! Mine was £975 for my first year when I was 17 (in July 01) third party fire and theft! Still a lot though...
All the insurance company has to do is go to a neighbour's house or a work colleague and ask them whose car the clio is...
It might please you more though that in my 5th year of insurance my quote is about £250 fully comp with all the trimmings - it certainly pays to bite the bullet and pay out for your own policy.0 -
The 'main' driver should be the driver who uses the car for the most mileage....otherwise you may have a problem when it comes to a claim. Insurance Companies are well aware of what youngsters & their parents try to do to keep premiums down and would look critically at any claim.0

the car is modified, but not too much, + its a 1.4. £1900 is the lowest ive had it down to, they gave me a discount when i put my girlfriend on the policy, shes only 17 and hasnt got a licence or provisional ( which i didnt think they could do) its pricey for my own policy, but i would ratehr go on my dads with direct line and get a no claims bonus. im not sure if this would work but im thinking about putting the car into my dads name, but im not sure if they would trace it back to find me as a named driver, and the previous owner of the car0

I think they would....
Also, remember that they NCB only works with Direct Line so when (in 4 years time) you take your own policy out, you'll have to stay with them or go to a new insurer with no NCB and be in a similar position...0 -
so the NCB cant be carried over to any other insurer if your a named driver?0
-
Nope - same if you do the "get a year's no claims in 10 months" thing (if they still do that)0
