Your right Honda are near the top is virtually all surveys. However someone decided to bend the truth a bit, to say it came the top for 7 years, which they didn't.

Honda did go through a bad period with the eighth generation civic where it was near the bottom of some surveys. Generally they are excellent cars, just like Toyota.

Or more likely those are the surveys they read ..... I doubt they deliberately bent the truth other than to themselves!

But realistically as you say...Toyota/Honda are always near the top of any serious survey (as manufacturers overall), even taking into account the 8th gen Civic!

Poor as the Civic was by Honda standards it was probably well above several other makes/models! More a bad child than a bad family...

Still undecided... I like both brands. My dad is a staunch Toyota guy. However, Honda's are cheaper even those with lower mileage and Full Honda SH...

I think given all this Honda is sneaking ahead. :-)

KIA cars were really crap when they lauched but they're investing a lot of money into their cars and developing some really good reliable motors.

Not true. Kias were mechanically on-par with the like of the French and Italian manufacturers until they were bought by Hyundai, who were always mechanically robust. Now they're both pretty much up there with the Japanese. It's never been a question of Kia investing in improvements, more a case of them ditching all the old 1980s Ford-based technology and moving over to Mitsubishi-based Hyundai tech.

Incidentally the OP mentioned Mazda 3s being expensive to fix. Given that they are essentially the same car as the Ford Focus, I'll leave it to others to decide if this is true or not ;)
all happen to be non european cars. i bet its just down to not many of them being on the road as fords, pugs, vws and vauxhalls

This has changed a lot over the last 10 years. The Japanese/Korean manufacturers have significant market share now. Renault for example have sunk like a stone, and are shifting less than half the cars Toyota do.

have you checked any nissan models? they are reliable and cheap too!

Too much Renault input, as mentioned earlier. They are now outselling Peugeot however :D

i have had a honda civic and a toyota avensis. both very good cars, cormfortable, economical and reliable etc.

only had one issue with toyota dealers with an extremely pushy sales manager who actually lost a sale! - but apart from that they have always very polite, helpful, accommodating and keen to resolve any issues.

likewise i only had one issue with honda and that was when the car was a matter of days old when the wipers were screeching across the glass and i was told i needed new wiper blades! a quick conversation with a director at the garage soon got that sorted and thereafter they were very good and helpful

both manufacturers and dealers were a very pleasant experience after peugeot, citreon and by far the worst in joint place were vauxhall and ford - neither of which i would purchase again.
  • "Toyotas sold in the UK are built here and have you driven a 1.4 diesel Yaris or Auris on a long journey?"

The U.K. Yaris is built in France and the Aygo/C1/107 are built in the Czech Republic.

MPG figures can be achieved which are very close to the manufacturers own and in 6th gear at 70mph, on a motorway, a Yaris is a very relaxing drive.

Toyota build the Avensis and Auris in the UK.
I'm on my third Yaris and I've always been so happy with them, that I kept going back for another one :) I would totally agree with what you've said above about the Yaris being a very relaxing drive on the motorway, and I've always got very close to the MPG, even beat it sometimes too ;)

I've previously had Peugeots, Vauxhalls, Fords -(rusty screws on Ka windows after a year), a VW, and a dreadful Chevrolet (I was mad getting that heap of dirt).

But once I got my first Toyota, I stopped being a brand-hopper, as I'd found what I liked best. I've always been happy with the quality, and with the staff at the Toyota dealers, who I've found to be far better than those I've come across elsewhere. The worst staff I've found in my local Vauxhall/Chevrolet dealers.

I'd say taking both cars out for a test drive will probably help you make your mind up too. Even things like comfort of the seats, visibility, instrument layout. I'd say its best to go for a car with a full service history from the main dealer.

A neighbour of mine has had 2 Nissans, 1 Mitsubishi, 2 Toyota Avensis, then a Honda Accord, which she only kept for a year (she always keeps her cars for a few years). It had a problem with the automatic wipers being stuck on, and another time it was towed away on a recovery truck. I think she decided to say goodbye to it then. After the Accord, she went back to Toyota for another Avensis. And her husband's had an Auris for years.

Another neighbour seems to like Nissans. She's jumped between 2 Nissans, next a Peugeot (it was back to the dealers for lots of repairs in only one year of ownership from new), a Ford after that, it didn't stay long either, then she went back to Nissan.

Another friend of mine bought the first Yaris in my town, and he still has it, and says its still going strong.

Good luck in picking your new car and let us know how you get on :)
