  • Honda have been vosted the most reliable car manufacturer for 7 years in a row,so cant see that standards have slipped in recent years.

    Which survey would that be?

londontoger, Two things, first many, most?, Toyotas sold in the UK are built here and have you driven a 1.4 diesel Yaris or Auris on a long journey? The Auris we have, which is heavier than the Yaris, does brilliantly and returns 52mpg in automatic mode a figure that seemed unobtainable a few years ago.
So my answer would be to go for the Corola or an Auris, plus not all modern cars have cam belts some have chains which do not need changing, just maintaining.
Someone else posted a reply to a similar question and recommended getting a petrol car with gas conversion worth looking at?

Thanks for this information about the Auris. I'm thinking about changing back to a diesel as I regularly do long motorway journeys. How comfortable is the Auris over a long trip?
  • Hi again, we regularly do a journey of 220 miles with one comfort stop and it is very comfortable for up to 4 adults, the middle rear seat is really for smaller people. We have had the car for two years and bought it when it was 3 years old. No problems so far, serviced every year by an indie. and we now know how to reset the flashing service spanner which they couldn't do.

The U.K. Yaris is built in France and the Aygo/C1/107 are built in the Czech Republic.

I would also take what LondonTiger says with a very large pinch of salt. They also seem to think it could be acceptable to drive through a red traffic light when there's nothing around!
They obviously have no experience of the 1.4 Toyota Diesel. Much more refined than VW's Farmer Giles tractor engine. MPG figures can be achieved which are very close to the manufacturers own and in 6th gear at 70mph, on a motorway, a Yaris is a very relaxing drive.

i know 2 people with the 2.2 diesel honda's and they have had no end of problems with them (just incase you were considering that variant )

Not disputing that but mine has just under 180,000 and had no major issues. (Had a turbo strip and clean at 170k). Never a top up of oil between 12,500 mile services.

Mines the TDCI (pre 2009), perhaps the newer engine is less reliable?

based on your miles, I think it would be best to get a TDI mk5 golf. VAG group can be expensive with repairs - but lets be honest how expensive can it get?

E.g. a lambda sensor will need replacing at 100K on a golf costing £120. The same sensor will cost £80 on a honda or toyota. Ok expensive. But that's over 100K miles - over it's lifetime it's not that expensive at all.

Servicing is more or less the same cost.

To be honest it's not going to be hugely expensive compared to a honday or toyota. Your biggest priority should be fuel economy - (if you are paying for the fuel yourself that is). I own a mk4 golf but you should be able to get an early model mk5 golf for around 3.5K which will be reliable and have decent miles.

The tiny 1.4 cars are designed for city. They're real dogs for motorway driving. A bigger hatchback is not only better to drive on motorways but it can be cheaper on fuel too. A golf will be more expensive that a pug 206. But the pug 206 is a tiny budget city car. They're in different categories.

The honda civic and vw golf are in the same category and will cost the same in parts and maintenance. Same would be true for a toyota avensis I should imagine.

The parts cost is almost immaterial nowadays.
Obviously some cars/models/engines have faults that cause expensive and frequent repairs... Ford/PSA 1.6 TDCI Turbo, Vauxhall DMF.... some cars are just expensive ... such as Volvo XCxx or Audi Qx because they are big and chunky off-roaders but
labour is going to be most of a bill for any major repair.

Some cars have hard to change parts (clutch on Honda 2.2 TDCI's) that mean more labour costs but mostly its labour going to kill you for any major repairs.... i.e. A clutch for an Audi 1.9 A4 might cost £50-100 more than for a Mondeo and a clutch for a BMW 3l Diesel more expensive again but in the end its the cost of labour that makes most of the difference.

For an older car where you don't want to pay manufacturer hourly rates the per hour charge is the same at your local independent regardless of the make of car.... (I hope)

What ever you choose make sure it has a large presences in the uk. Japanese parts can be expensive and if like my Honda which only about 1600 ever imported, second hand parts are like finding gold and new parts like my abs cpu or abs pump, each costing more than I earned in a month without them even being fitted and both broke within 4 months of each other.

Several..and several are probably some other manufacturer.. however overall nearly every one mentions Honda near the top....

However as per subject of this thread so is Toyota!

Your right Honda are near the top is virtually all surveys. However someone decided to bend the truth a bit, to say it came the top for 7 years, which they didn't.

Honda did go through a bad period with the eighth generation civic where it was near the bottom of some surveys. Generally they are excellent cars, just like Toyota.
