technika tv at tesco

hello, and hope somebody can help me. This is my first post here. Mother bought a new TV with built in DVD in January 2012. Technika 26-56D. In October the DVd stopped reading. I contacted the store and the helpline and both say it has to be uplifted for repair which may take up to 5 days. I have explained that my mother is 98 years old, lives alone and depends on her TV to get her through some very long days. I asked whether I could return the TV to the shop for exchange, but the advice is always that they will repair it within 5 days.. Can I simply take it back and ask for exchange or do I have to offer them a chance to repair first? In future I'll buy from local supplier who has always been able to call and repair on the day. PS I don't have the original packaging!

Your mother has a tv which is nearly a year old and you expect a new replacement because it has stopped working?

Firstly, they need to determine that the set hasn't failed due to some action by your mother.
Why should Tesco replace a tv damaged by the owner?

Secondly, having decided that a remedy is appropriate, that can be either a repair, replacement or refund.
Any refund can be reduced to take account of the use that has been had.
Your mother can choose the remedy but cannot force a disproportionately costly remedy.

P.s. you don't need the original packaging.

Repaired within a reasonable time is part of your rights, 5 days is more than reasonable, infact, I am surprised they can do it that quickly considering the time of year.

5 days is lighning fast when it comes to tv repairs, your not going to get a same day repair anywhere these days due to the nature of the technology. Parts now need to be sourced and a local dealer wont have the vast amount of parts needed in stock, to offer a same day service.

    As has been said
    it a reasonable response
Are you telling me nobody in the family/friends has a spare TV to loan for 5 days?
  • thanks everybody. I was simply asking whether anybody thought an exchange was a feasible request, and from your responses it obviously isn't. We had used the dvd player about six times, and I expected that it would give more service than that. Yes I did consider finding another TV set while it is repaired,. However it took about two months to accustom her to the change when this one was bought, and we all hoped it would last (even though it was cheap) for her lifetime . I am not in the habit of demanding refunds or exchanges after a year - merely wondered whether it was reasonable. Thanks again for the quick replies

Thanks for your explanation. I don't think I was looking for a same day repair so much as a repair at home. It's just that I've been in the habit of getting a man to call and quote, then give me a ring when the part comes in. I know, I know, I'm living in the past but I have had that level of service fairly recently. I didn't realise that Tesco repairs were from a central unit - thought they might have some kind of local contracts. Ah well

Ps .Just looked at my post and realise I said used to call and repair on the day. I should have said call, inspect and arrange a return call for repair. I was trying to keep it concise. Apologies

The advice given is exactly right.
My query is your suggestion that she relies on the telly to get her through. She's from a generation which mocks us for our reliance on technology, surely she ought to be an expert on how to entertain oneself?

She's 98. You probably run out of options at that age!

The radio? Or a book if her eyesight is still ok (even a large print one)? Or perhaps invite her round to yours to watch tv and for her dinner if she doesnt live too far away.

Not ideal I know but as others have said, 5 days is actually really good. 2-4 weeks isnt unusual for a tv repair.
