What feedback should I leave?

I bought a canvas bag from eBay that was described as 'new without tags'. It was only a fiver plus postage so not expensive at all.
It's just arrived and there's no way it's new. It stinks of smoke, has a couple of dirty areas on the front (just slight and will easily wash off I think), it has some fine crumbs and a couple of hairs inside (no big deal and will hoover out)and the bottom of it has that dark look on the corners that you get after the bag has been put down a few times (again, just slight and not the end of the world).
I'm not going to bother complaining for the sake of what I paid. I'll clean it up and febreeze it
so it should be ok.
I'm not happy about giving positive feedback as the bag seems to me to have been used therefore not 'new' but I think a neg is over the top? The seller has bought plenty but judging by the feedback this is only the second thing she has sold (unless others just haven't left any).
Best thing to do please?

The first thing to do is contact the seller, explain everything as you've just said above and ask for a refund . A good seller will negotiate with you and possibly even suggest a small refund if they believe they may have misdecribed the item.
Depending on how the seller handles the situation then leave feedback as appropriate. Ebay themselves suggest that neg or neutral feedback should be left only after contacting the other party.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I agree with Soolin and the seller deserves a message before you leave any kind of feedback.
How she responds would reflect on any feedback I left.0 -
I'm not necessarily fussed about getting a refund though. I can still use the bag once I've cleaned it up and for a fiver it's still worth it I think as they are around £20/£25 new.
I just didn't want to leave positive feedback as I didn't feel it was deserved because of the above points.

I would still contact the seller, give them a chance to respond and see what they say.0

If you are planning on leaving negative feedback, you should contact the seller first - they may offer a partial refund if you want to keep it.
You could leave neutral feedback and an honest description of what you received.
However, if you don't contact the seller first, you risk receiving negative feedback as a retaliation.0 -
Okay, I'm going to sound really stupid here but what am I going to say to her?
I don't want to send the back bag or get a refund, I'm just emailing to tell her it looks as if it isn't new and has some slight dirt etc ? Isn't she going to wonder why I bothered to get in touch at all?

I'd give them a chance to offer a part refund beofre leaving feedback. If they didn't respond favourably I'd then leave neutral.
Even "new" items from smoking households will often smell, so if you wnat something that actually smells new, you probably want to buy from sellers who specify smoke and pet free household. Obvious signs of use are another matter: in that as the item should clearly not have been described as new.
If you don't watn the hassle of contacting the seller, you could leave no feedback at all - it's not compulsory.0 -
I would get in touch with seller and say something like......
"I have received the item but I'm not 100% happy with the condition of it. It was listed as 'new without tags' but it doesn't look new to me. It is dirty and has obvioussly been used. I want to keep the bag and am willing to clean it up but would like a partial refund of £x for my trouble."
Failing that I would leave no feedback at all. IMO negs should only be left for a seller once you have tried to sort a problem out. Leaving a neg without contacting the seller isn't on.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

But surely that's the whole point about feedback. If you message her your disatisfaction, how she responds to that should make you decide upon feedback.
If she's very apologetic and offers 100% refund then in my book she deserves positive.0 -
She described a new bag and you got what was obviously an old one. That is a breach of contract. I've had the same problem and if you don't pull someone up on it then it will happen again an dthis time i t might not be suhc a cheap item. I would definatly demand some sort of retribution for a broken contract.0
