Hooking up Laptop to TV

Options
Just signed up to TalkTalk. Seems that I get free membership of some film download thing for a year. I would rather watch on telly and so went out and bought an HDMI (is this right?) cable to hook the computer up to the TV. But a friend told me I would also need to get something for the sound. I can't check yet 'cos I don't go live for another week. Does anyone know if he is right? If he is, what will I need? Does this actually work?

Thanks

PS Sorry for the question - I'm not really very technically minded.

We can't tell you, as you don't say what make/model of TV and laptop.
But you can test it using any output from the laptop, no need to wait for your sub to go live.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hi there

In the laptop settings, you need to select the TV HDMI as the audio destination depending on your OS, you'll find in the Control Panel section.

Yes, that's what my friend got too.

The laptop is a Toshiba L500.

  • Well, it worked first time but second time there was no sound. I checked in the control panel and it simply said that theHDMI device was not connected, even though it patently was (the picture was coming through fine).

Played around with various settings for a bit and no luck. Then rebooted and it worked fine again. Does anyone have any idea how to kick the computer into recognising the audio connection?

    Thanks
