vista with speedtouch 330 modem Help!

Options
Hi everyone

wee problem.

My parents just bought a new dell laptop with vista. They had broadband from NTL (freedom broadband) in their old machine, and therefore one of the the thomson 330 speedtouch modems. I phoned NTL and asked for a new disk to allow me to set up the speedtouch modem in the new laptop and the guy told me that they didn't have any, I would need to go to the speedtouch web site and download a driver disk from there. I did this using my machine, stuck the disk in the new laptop followed the instructions and all went well until....no speedtouch modem detected!! So I tried again and again using all four USB ports, same message! I gave up, thought dump NTL and try dial up orange which was installed in the lap top, and order broadband from them, and they would then send me a new modem which would work. So....went through the set up, heard it dial up, but no connection could be made! Can you not have a dial up connection if there is broadband already on the line? I have no idea what to do next, and my dad is about to chuck a £600 dell in the bin!! Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

The SpeedTouch is a known problem with Vista. The manufacturer hasn't bothered releasing Vista drivers for it.

Try googling around, something like "vista speedtouch".

    Links such as:

    May provide a solution.

  • Hi libby, I am getting a new computer and have got the speedtouch 330 and in a bid to sort out potential problems with vista i came across this website

It may offer some help. It seems a lot of people are suffering the same problem.

You would need to remove the adsl filter off the phone line that the modem is using, you can leave them on all the other lines/phone in the house.

You might be able to use it with the filter, I have just not been that lucky in the past.

Wrong! Any non ADSL device (phone, fax, dial-up modem) used on an ADSL enabled line needs filtering.

Wrong in this case, if you are NOT trying to use broadband, but just connect to the internet to download drivers using dial up as stated

an ADSL filter will not help, it will need to be re applied when broadband use resumes though.

    thomson's LINKY website says
NOTE: Any previous ST-USB/330 Driver must be removed prior to installing version 4.1

an ADSL filter will not help.

    The first post states:

So in this case a dial-up modem is being used on an ADSL enabled line and therefore needs an ADSL filter for it to work correctly. Wrong again!

Broadband is obviously not on the line, its just that the line is broadband enabled, if broadband was on the line as you are understanding it, there would be no problem as the computer would be connected.

You are talking male bovine genitalia! If the line is broadband enabled, it will interfere with non ADSL devices and therefore needs filtering. The OP asked the question "Can you not have a dial up connection if there is broadband already on the line?"

A workaround to the problem would be to buy a router, which doesn't require drivers, so works on Vista, it just plugs into your ethernet port, with the added benefit of better security (firewall/NAT) than a modem. If you bought a wireless one, then the laptop wouldn't even have to be plugged in to surf.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
