Can someone do a sanity check on this calculation!

I need to cover 2.7m*1.8m with 4cm of gravel...the on-line calculators all say approx. 300kg (or 0.3 tonne).

Does this sound right, 'cos I can't get that much in the car!

Would need to know the density of the gravel, but it sounds about right.

    A "dm" is a decimeter = a tenth of a meter = 10cm.
If you multiply the three dimensions in decimeters you get the volume in litres.
    So 27 x 18 x 0.4 = 194.4
So you need about 200 litres of gravel.

200 litres of water would weigh 200kg.
300kg of gravel, therefore, sounds about right.

That's 12 25kg bags - that should fit in most cars.
    Not even wrong

I think most builders merchants sell by the meter now its easier to measure how much you need...
I.E 1 tonne could be equivilent to 1m cubed or 1.1m cubed depending on what your getting.....
Measure the area times by the depth this will give you the amount you need plus get a little extra just in case....
If you have any left over you can use it in the top of your pots.......:D

1 tonne bulk bag is only equivalent to approximately 0.6 cubic metres and not 1 cubic metre.

I made the same initial mistake but 1 tonne equalling 1 cubic metre only applies to water.

Like I said, it depends what your getting.....

If you order 1 tonne of water from the builders merchant you get 1 cubic meter....

In fact if your ordering sand its nearer 0.8m but some one from Travis Perkins would have to verify this, and also not all builders merchants use all builders merchants bags.......

Yep - the mistake was made with gravel.

Calculating sand I just gave up on. As you say builders merchants vary, differing size bags, some by volume some by weight, some supply sopping wet, others just fill to what would be the settled level, others overfill so you get a sand shower when the lorry is unloaded. - Just as well it's comparatively cheap!
  • £53 inc deliver for a tonne of 2-3cm white gravel in central London. From builders Merchants. 50% less than B&Q from memory.

Gravel can look a bit naff unless it is neatly contained e.g. meets the end of a row of paving or a wall or wooden partition. doesn't stop weeds growing through it - woodchips prevent weeds much better from my experience.

I'd buy more than you need as it settles and sinks into the ground after wet weather.

Hi there - can you please give me more details of where i can purchase the white gravel for £53 a tonne? Thanks.
