I need an idiot's guide to suffering debit card ID fraud

HISTORY
Out of the blue, my girlfriend's CO-OP debit card was declined (by Next and Tesco) - this is odd as she was recently paid and held ample funds.
After the second decline, she contact the CO-OP who advised her that her card had been suspended(?) due to suspicous activity. This activity involves SIX same-day payments to WONGA - the amounts involved getting increasingly larger and now totalling £303.36!!
We do not and will use WONGA (that is a different matter!).
She has been advised that the support team will contact her and a new card provided.
QUESTIONS
What service should we expect? Should we expect a full recovery of the cash, what is the typical time scale for this process?
The CO-OP correctly suspended the card but neglected to question/contact my girlfriend - this could have left her in a difficult, cashless situation (fuel tank of new fuel with no card to pay!?!). Should they have taken the effort to contract her?
If the money has been paid to WONGA then it must relate to an account/debt and that in turn must have a person related to it!
How thorough an explanation should we expect?
Has anyone else suffered a similar WONGA related fraud?
Thanks in advance

The Idiots guide.
Do NOT cut the card up ! No matter what they tell you, ever, never EVER.
It has the history of use on the chip. Thats why they want you to cut it up.
Next, remember the BANK is the victim not you, forgot that and things get very hard, remind them at every possible opportunity that they are the ones who have been a victim and in the process, allowed someone to take Your money.
Third, dont get in to any discussions as to what has happened or what may have happened, that is there problem, banks love to shovel the crime on to you to sort out.
And Last, if they have the card, demand it is secured as evidence and not destroyed or tampered with in any way.Be happy...;)0 -
Spacey - the chip has the history of use on it - really - that is a new one on me!
Your statement will show all entries - that is all you need.0 -

!!!!!!..... Sorry for the swearing but what a load of rubbish.
The fraud is to Wonga and will have been made via the internet.... So no CHIP needed.
God I hate some of the rubbish posted on the internet.... Some idiot will believe this and spread it like wild fire.
Wonga, is a very common fraud at the moment.
OP. Do not worry.
She will get a full refund as soon as the transactions debit. If they do not. Just remind the fraud departmant of PSD (payment services directive).
They will be fully aware of it and the implications if they do not follow it.
Banks have upto 24 hours to contact customers when the security system kicks in. You just have to remember that due to high volume of transactions, thanks to people going mad at christmas. Fraud checks are through the roof.
How do I know. Well I do this day in day out.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

Think Spacey has been watching too many TV programmes ! All bank systems have history of card usage, it doesn't matter whether the card is cut up, melted, shredded or baked in a cake.
Banks aren't bothered what you do with the card really, the advice to cut up the card is simply to prevent further usage, nothing more sinister. As for the advice not to get into any discussion with the bank, how do you expect them to investigate if you won't co-operate with them ?
If the OP's girlfriend is genuinely not involved in any dealings with Wonga, she will be refunded. No question.
Spacey's Idiots Guide  Spot on ! Seems to be well qualified in this area.0 -
Thanks - this is exactly what I need: a simple, straight forward reply and reassurance that we're not alone/unique. :T
The one benefit is that it has (justly or not) increased my disliking of WONGA (and if I'm honest that whole breed of parasitic scum - my opinion - you're welcome to ignore it)0 -

Why do you blame Wonga ? Surely you should be blaming the person who has used your GF's card details ?0 -

You are not alone.
What is great is not so long ago Wonga were extolling how good their systems were at stopping just this from happening....
Fraudsters using other peoples card numbers to pay for loans....
Yet since then there has been a massive increase in fraud too them :mad:Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
I do not blame WONGA for this.
I don't really want to side-track this thread but I simply and completely disagree with the very existance of companies such as WONGA - whether they offer extortionate general loans or payday loans. They should not be allowed to operate/advertise when their sole purpose seems to be to take advantage of desperate people or those that simply do not know better.
One such companies TV advert includes a woman who continually receives unexpected bills like EVERY YEAR when her car fails its MOT. If it fails every year then how is it unexpected?? Consider the previous bills and then save an equivalent portion each much. This isn't the solution offered instead take a load at 2345% (or whatever the figure is!)
Phew rant over.......anyone know aboutdebit card ID fraud?

Well, they will be aware that if an aspect of the EU PSD that the OP relies on has not been enacted into English law then the OP will have a very diffcult (and expensive) job to enforce it.0
