Credit decline from 3 mobile

Options
Hi,

I applied for a contract phone (my second) on 3 this morning and was declined at the credit check.

I've had a contract phone with 3 for over 8 years, have bought a house this summer and have only one credit card (with a manageable non-maxed out limit). I've been with my bank for 28 years and my employer for 12 and have never missed a payment on any debt.

It was a bit of a shock (to be turned down for a phone for £25/month at least!), so I checked Experian and Equifax online this morning. Experian shows 999 with no issues whatsoever, Equifax only shows one warning that I am not on the electoral roll at the house I bought in August.

I am (I've had a polling card) and Experian shows my new address as on the electoral roll.

When I called Equifax to question it they just said anything from September - December would take until January to show up.
Can this be right? And if not, can I get them to expunge the decline as I'm concerned my credit rating will now be borked.

Thanks for any tips!

I believe 3 check Experian, they did for me. I doubt whether the electoral roll itself that is the problem.

Has 3 expanded on why you were declined? With a long internal history and it would seem an otherwise excellent credit history a bit odd that you've been declined.

    I would appeal their decline.

But surely with the OP's credit score;)at 999 they shouldn't have failed.
  • Thanks! 3 didn't give any details - I will try contacting Experian. I don't mind if there's something I don't know about, would just like to be able to see it!

Oh and just to add that I have read all the comments about Experian's systems so am aware that 999 could be total toot :)

Alright, alright...let's leave that be!!! ;-)

If you already have the details off Experian and that is where 3 indeed search then it is likely a decision by 3, so I would appeal their decline directly with them.

  • thanks - i didn't realise that 3 could decline it. i wonder if the recent move or addition of the second number is an issue.

balls to them anyway - i'll go elsewhere.

thank you again for the info!
  • Might be totally off the mark but I remember years ago, Phones4U turned me down for a mobile contract because I had previously bought a contract phone from them using the same credit card that I was using that day - tried a different card and went through no bother.
  • Ooh aah - HM! That may be the case here - how interesting.
    Thanks!

Edit: Actually no - they didn't get my credit card here. Same direct debit details though - seems weird - people must get contract phones for family members all the time, right?
  • 3 is the lender/provider so it is ultimately their decision and theirs alone, the information at the CRA's is only there to assist them in making a decision along with information you provide and any information they already know about you (existing customer).

If there is nothing obviously wrong with the information on your credit files then it likely a business decision.

Obviously if you try elsewhere and get declined, you will likely harm your ability to get credit short term... make sure nothing untoward is on any of your credit files at all the agencies, whilst Equifax may indeed update your ER data, keep an eye on it to make sure they do.

  • thanks - the more i think about it i think it may be that three didn't want me to have two contract products?

does anyone know how soon after this morning's check i could expect to see the footprint on my experian report - tomorrow?
