looooooooooooooool might as well book it in for a head gasket would be a lot cheaper

But that would not repair the swirl valve issue!

Sorry if this has been posted before.

But whats the most ridiculous price you have been quoted for garage work?

My sister got told by a garage that it was £280 to do the brake pads and said that the car was unsafe to drive if she never got it done.... I later did them myself for £20.

From personal experience £165 to adjust coil-overs.

I had to Google to find out what coil overs are and discovered that they are adjustable suspension units .... seems strange that, if adjusability is their big merit, that it costs £165 to get it done. Do you have to reset them as they age or if you carry more passengers/luggage?

£3000 for 4 shock absorbers and 4 brake disks on my Mk1 MR2. This was a quote from a Toyota dealer waaaaay back in 2001 (ish), it was the incentive for me to start doing work on my cars myself. I was extremely fortunate to have a lovely neighbour who helped me through it and I've been a convert ever since. :D

Oh I think I got it all done for £800 in the end.

Adjusting them is simple (a couple of special spanners), however doing it properly takes a lot of time. You have to take into account the weight at each corner with the driver in the seat and also the kind of driving you're going to be doing. As two extremes drag racing will require a completely different setup to circuit driving.
  • the gearknob on my car is worn went to scrappy expecting to pay around £9.00 for the part(ebay prices are around that for salvage replacements) £145.00+vat he quoted. i said i want just the gearknob not the whole gear stick and linkage, he said yes just the gearknob if you went to main dealer he said they would cost you £300.

my aunt had a pug with a spring gone, they quoted £500 labour to replace both sides.

my down pipe went on my old rover 214 (m reg box shape) i was quoted £325.00 to supply and fit. (bought the part £42,00 ish and fitted myself (20 mins of time).

£950 for a failed MOT. I got suspicious and MOT'd it at another garage - which failed it on just £80 of stuff.

I now use an MOT garage that does not carry our repairs. Result - 15+ years MOT failure free.

That explains why I've never heard of them - all my racing has been on 2 wheels [plus pedals].
  • £550 for a hand brake cable on a Renault Grand Scenic - I rang 3 garages and that was the cheapest quote!

Apparently you have to replace the whole unit, it's one of those ridiculous automatic/electronic handbrakes.

£20 for the same thing on my Mondeo, not electronic.
Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,108

yes it would, you just say to the mechanic that you want a new inlet manifold fitted. the manifold is removed when taking the head off so all you would be paying is for the head gasket job and the inlet manifold:money:
