Sorry if this has been posted before.
But whats the most ridiculous price you have been quoted for garage work?
My sister got told by a garage that it was £280 to do the brake pads and said that the car was unsafe to drive if she never got it done.... I later did them myself for £20.
From personal experience £165 to adjust coil-overs.

Any Diagnostic check fee.
Why do you need to know the code ?
is that not for the mechanic to help him fix the damned thing ?
Why a separate charge for plugging in a simple machine that helps them mend the car ?
Daft charge, wont use any garage that does.Be happy...;)0 -
£165 to adjust coil overs sounds like a bargain to do then properly.
Ive seen worse quotes for brake pads.
Kwikfit wanted over £400 when i phoned them once. Front/rear pads and a caliper.
I got it done for around £300 with quick service included.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
£1260 (last week) to replace a Vectra 150 diesel inlet manifold. Parts are about £300 and yes its about seven hours labour. Needless to say I will probably do it myself when the weather warms up.0

An hours labour by a VW main dealer garage to update the car software after I had a towbar fitted.
You may think that is reasonable. However, less than a year later the car developed a fault. I took it back to the garage who said I should have had the software updated after the towbar was fitted! So I'd paid for an hours labour for nothing. Now that was ridiculous.
This is the same garage who forgot to fit a part to the car after changing the cylinder head gasket - as soon as I started the car I noticed it was making a loud noise. They found the missing part in the workshop when I took the car back. Don't they start the engine to test it after a job like that?
This is also the same garage that I took the car to to check for an oil leak. They told me there was nothing wrong. The next morning I came out of my house to find a puddle of oil under my car!
Luckily it was a company car but the leasing company dictated where I took it.0 -
£140 to change front discs and pads.
Bought discs and pads myself using a discount code (better ones than what the garage would have supplied) and got a mate of a mate who works in a garage to fit them for £20. Total cost £70.0 -
£1500 for a new turbo when all that was wrong was a clip and fallen off and a rod on the back and disconnected. Cost about 20p for a new clip which solved the problem as there was nothing wrong with the turbo itself.0

Needed my front wipers reset as they had fowled on the ice after the missus tried to use them to clear the window.
Instead of waiting an hour for me to come home and take it to my usual garage, she took it to Mercedes who replaced both motors, the arm assemblies, linkage and both wiper blades for £490; they later refused to hand over the old parts or at least let me see what the problem they said was.
My mechanic later mentioned that a common fault was that the armitures become unclipped and it would have taken him 10 minutes to solve. Also, where he gets Mercedes parts, he got a quote for the materials and also a mentioned that "they had never ever had a request for these parts since ever!"0 -

£2200 for a reconditioned gearbox, supplied and fitted to my Vectra, quoted by a dealership.
I skipped the dealership and went to the company that most of dealerships in the midlands use to do all transmission work for them..... Cost me £750 INCLUDING a new clutch kit and slave cylinder!!!!
I'm not sure how this particular dealership can justify charging £1450 to take my car and pass it on to someone else to do the work.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

£300 to 'do work for MOT'. Sounds reasonable, right? I got my car back and checked it out. All he'd done was polish my bonnet! I got my money back in the end and got her repaired elsewhere.
A friend's car stopped working while she was visiting me, so she took it to the dealership. Bill for £120....to replace a fuse  Mechanics justified it by saying that it was an unusual fuse to fail, so they had to go through a load of other checks first, which took time. I understand it up to a point, but surely they must've been a bit embarrassed at £119 in labour for a £1 part.
On the other end of the scale my local garage just charged me half what I expected for MOT work. :beer:0
