I personally think it's worth spending money on a good bed because of the time you spend there, but you can maybe look at cheaper items for things like tables or bookcases.

In terms of white goods, some places do have refurbished ones, and it may be worth a look at those. You can always replace at a later date as necessary.

The bed we're buying new - we've been putting up with a horrible one for a while and want to treat ourselves.

    thanks for the tips!

freegle or freecycle as your stating points.

Beds - get a new mattress even if you have to use a 2nf hand base.

Also skips can be great if you can get to stuff before it is broken up.

BHF are way overpriced, was in their maidstone branch awhile back and they had a range of battered, 25+year old washing machines for between £110 to £170 (!!!)
  • Well, I'm going to vote for BHF as well. Table and bookcase for 35 pounds the two the other week. Study now looks fab. Can't answer for the value of their white goods, though.

In fact, bit of an eye opener on my recent BHF visit. They were offering a couple of good-quality sofas for 80 pounds each. Next door was Brighthouse. Sofas - didn't look nearly such good quality - 600 pounds!!

  • Is it possible BHF shops have different pricing policies in different areas? Mine is ridiculously overpriced, to the point that they sell second hand IKEA furniture for more than it costs to buy it new in IKEA itself. I gave them a bedstead I had paid £70 for (new), I saw it in their window for £150. It was there for over a year too.
Not impressed. On the other hand, I have got a few little bargains from there, but you really do have to look hard and long to find them...
Maybe different branches are better though?

In our house, when things break, we just pretend they still work

I sold a nigh on perfect mahogany dining table and 4 chairs/2 carver chairs (velvet covered padded seats) on ebay for around £100. All quite fancy, just maybe slightly dated now. You can definitely pick up a good quality bargain if you can collect items.

  • These are all great answers and again, your time is very much appreciated.

We've got a Martlett's hospice quite close to us that regularly has some nice things in it too. I've managed to secure a sofa from my Grandmother, so now we're in the market for a sofabed for the living room. Any suggestions on where there might be a good, sturdy one of these for cheap?

    Thanks again!
