does anyone really go to the supermarket on Boxing Day

I never go shopping on Boxing Day. I would rather the retail workers had two days off.0

the real issue is the management who make the decision to keep the shop open, im sure they would do this even if NOBODY came through the doors all day on the off chance one person did.
Its all down to management greed, competitiveness and the drop in retail spending on the high street compared to online shopping and discounts which EVERYONE on here prefers.
they say 40% of all shopping is now done online and a lot of that is because of home deliveries and discounts,
I feel if they offered the same discounts in store as online and did home deliveries it would even things out a bit,
ive never understood why big business have driven people towards internet shopping then acted all hurt when people abandon the high street.
Anyway if the shop is open , which isnt our decision by the way, why would anyone not shop there? if I run out of cream or am bored or fancy a bit of fresh air and im a shopaholic or maybe someone lives on there own or be real we dont need an excuse maybe we want to see if the turkeys are half price or whatever why shouldnt we?
yes i feel sorry for the staff but its no different for the police firemen or nurses, people who work in power stations, road repairers, electricians, plumbers, nursing assistants, airport staff etc etc who also work over xmas, including xmas day,
its not nice to live in a society like this for those who have to work instore but its not the customers fault for shopping there for which they should be very very grateful and not resentful in this credit crunched era.
They should save their resentment for the board of directors of tesco asda sainsbury and not the man in the street0 -
I think our local is closed but I would go if I needed something. I don't see the issue with it, I'm on call for work as it's just a normal working day a lot of our (not UK based) clients.
Also I know this is the Christmas forum, but not everyone goes mad on Christmas food to have loads of leftovers to use up for days on end. It's just the two of us, so I have the smallest rolled joint of turkey that you can buy. Will probably only do lunch and a round of sandwiches so will be gone by the end of the day.
Generally, supermarkets being closed for more than a day would actually be an issue for me now. I have a tiny fridge so can't really keep more than two days worth of fresh food stocked. So if I shopped on Christmas Eve, I would actually be out of fresh veg by Boxing Day. We'll make do, but I'll be first in line on the 27th to restock!0 -
I see the only day supermarkets are shut is Xmas day. They are open on Boxing Day. When do the staff get a rest. Can they not just close for 2 days out of the year??
I have never been to the supermarket on Boxing Day, but I have been to the Boxing Day sales on several occasions, only prior to having kids I think.
I sit on the fence with this, because the flip side is why should employees have to take Xmas off work if they'd rather take annual leave at another time (like the school Summer holidays please.) I suspect supermarket staff are paid more on bank holidays, usually have some say in covering it or not or can swap shifts, plus there are lots of people working over the holiday period to stop the country grinding to a halt. You can't please everybody all of the time though springs to mind. One member of our family is working on Xmas Day this year so won't be at home for Christmas morning.
My husband is one of those who has no choice but to take some of his annual leave over Christmas which I don't think is fair either.0 -
Not everyone celebrates christmas!
The only day I have off next week is christmas day.0 -
The big Tesco's in our town is shut on Boxing Day, although the small express is open, I have been in there on Boxing Day, but it was a First Aid need for my dog!0

I would thank you twice for this post if I could, I feel your painOK. I confess - I've been to a supermarket on boxing day.
Anyone who had my mother-in-law staying for the Christmas break would also use any excuse to get out of the house alone ( she sees going for a walk as "entertainment", therefore would expect to join me). Going for a solitary stroll round Asda on the pretext of buying more sprouts or vodka is infinitely better than feigning serious illness and spending the afternoon in A&E:D

I work for a council and because of an EU directive we have to pay back hours if bank holidays fall on the day we are supposed to work and if a bank holiday falls on your day off then the council owe you hours. Some of us end up losing a weeks leave and Saturday staff gains loads of hours in leave. It certainly doesn't put you in a holiday mood . Still at least it's a job!!
I think unless you work for emergency services a bank holiday is a bank holiday and everything should be closed. Fruit and vegetables will last out of a fridge for 2days. Instead of shopping get out and enjoy the weather!!!My secret fantasy is having 2 men....
