We ALWAYS told our children that mummy and daddy bought the pressies and sent them to Santa for delivery. If they didn't receive exactly what they'd asked for, it was explained that we couldn't afford it. Never any problems. They're grown up now tho.0

Bah, I never had you down as a humbug muncher, Martin! :money:
Btw, Santa has never really come to our household, but the magic that only Father Christmas can bring lives on indefinitely0 -

I agree with this.
I do think there is a case to 'reign santa in' these days. I think a return to the more original (and less commercialised) idea is preferable than killing off santa completely.Herman - MP for all!0 -
maybe the true meaning of christmas should be re-introduced to children.
(for those families who believe of course)0 -
Is it the rich kids that are doing best or the ones who's parents are financially inept and are spending money they can't afford? I suspect inappropriate and excessive gifting occurs regardless of the parents actual ability to finance it!Adventure before Dementia!0

The fact that mummy and/or daddy are paying, not a mythical being, could actually be an important lesson for children.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I've always been glad that the little luxors didn't really believe in Father Christmas. Aged approx 7, one looked me straight in the eye and asked "Why do you tell us lies?"
"Parents don't like to admit to being nice to children in case they get spoiled" I replied.
Phew. I'm glad I could think fast in those days.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Kids grow up far too quickly these days, and the world can be a horrible place at times, so I see absolutely no harm in letting them believe in a little magic. The excitement of has he been? Has he left anything? Did he get my list? Did he like my cookies? Did rudolf eat his carrot?
I plan to keep it alive for as long as is possible0 -
I use to tell my children that I bought their gifts and Santa's helpers would pick them up and then Santa would decide if they had been good enough to receive them. I do the same with my grandchildren, it saves hiding them (once wrapped) and they know they really did come from Grandma and Grand-dad, so to them they are extra special.£2021 in 2021 no.17 £1,093.20/£20210

I'm told I am strange for this but I was livid with my parents when I found they'd lied to me about father christmas. It made me question and dis-believe everything else they'd ever told me. I quietly felt a bit stupid for having believed the whole thing.
I would not get rid of the idea altogether but I do think kids should know from the off it's only a story.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0
