I'm mainly done. I'm getting to the stage now with kids where I can't actually buy in advance because they keep changing their minds. DH's brother & wife always wait til the last minute before they put in their order (never happy with what they get- I'd rather give them cash now). I just save monthly for all yearly expenses so that I don't have to worry about being short if I do have to do a huge shop.
I think our savings will get plundered before Christmas because we've now finished the lounge and started the dining room. This involves another gut and start again. New furniture the lot really. Then we'll need to carpet the whole area so that's quite a bit of carpet. Usually get underlay from ebay as it's cheaper. DH wants to get someone in to do this due to the size of it and I can't blame him. It'll be a heck of a lot easier if he does.

Kaz - I've always found carpets last longer if they're properly laid - and for the amount it costs to get it done, it saves a real PITA of a job...Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Too true, that's why I know it's going to cost a bomb because I'm not scrimping on the quality of the carpet either. Our stair carpet was very good quality, but now I'm sick of the sight of it... though to be fair it's been there 10 years...:pMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I can't promise I'll still love it in 10 years but our present lounge carpet is a monstrosity. Been down since the year dot. Remember when brown & orange flowers with bits of yellow & green were in? I don't! It's good quality though. We've put up with it for 3 1/2 years so doing ok!
Our stair carpet for our flat when we sold it came from a skip!Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
 OK, you need to get rid of it now.:rotfl:
When I was hunting for a cream wool carpet for our bedroom I refused to pay £35 a square metre, but found a local carpet shop which buys up the end of batches from the carpet mills, and passes the savings on to it's customers - result was a wool carpet fitted with underlay for £20 a square metre - it was someone from work who suggested them, so ask around at T break time,or on the local moneysaving boards.;)
On the overpayments front we managed another £600 this month - it was meant to be the spare £600 stashed in DH's ISA, but I'm hoping by the time we get to bill payment time at the start of November we'll have found enough money not to have to use the ISA money.
Off to the hairdressers today for my quarterly haircut - wouldn't it be simpler if we found a style we liked and pressed the pause button to stop our hair growing??Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Hi,
Is it me, or are we getting more posts on the MFW board (as I post to bump MFIT3 back onto the first page) ? Perhaps the credit crunch is making even more people jittery about their debts?
I am happy as I will get getting about 6.5K from an inheritance next month which will help with the problem of the mortgage going "backwards" due to unemployment.
We're also not going to "do" Christmas this year (entertaining lots of people and working hard and spending money in the process) and are going to just spend it the two of us, without a turkey and trimmings (nice nibbles and fizz instead?). Presents are also cancelled except for children, though I will make some seriously alcoholic fruit cakes and distribute them to people instead

I'm a bit of a lurker and take inspiration from this board but I've noticed the number of viewers on the front page is up from the 'normal' numbers.
:TAnd good for you re the cakes:T, I'm sure recipients will be delighted as it shows you've put thought and effort into their gift. Personally, I think it's far nicer going back to a few old fashioned values, makes you appreciate things far more and you can enjoy yourself without the worry of the January card bill
All the best and keep up the good work.

Totally agree about this thread being inspirational but we need to keep at it as times are really tough at the moment. I get really scared just reading the news seem to be one crisis to another.
Anyway reason for posting was just tell you my good news that my very nice company is giving us £500 Chrismas bonus (before tax) and the 24th off. That is Chrismas sorted for us going to Denmark to stay with my sister so only need flights and presents so some can go towards the mortgage.Save £12k in 25 No 49
