Cupid_s, that sounds like a fantastic holiday. When I read this thread it is interesting to hear about what other MFIT'ers are doing in addition to paying off the mortgage, and what they deem a priority over their overpayments.

I'm sure some people think that we all sit here in doom and gloom eating 8p noodles and beans on toast just to pay off the mortgage. For me, its a mindset thing. The converted (us) see the mortgage as a debt to be repaid, whereas other people view the mortgage as a regular monthly payment they can't influence.

Since I started this challenge I do think "Do I want/need this more than I want to overpay the mortgage?" Sometimes the answer is yes so I buy whatever it is, but the challenge is a kind of benchmark I can use to assess how badly I want something.

Keep going everyone. This middle year will be quite tough. We're in the swing of things and the novelty has worn off, but we aren't quite through the tunnel yet.

So we were celebrating at the weekend after accepting an offer on our BTL  (not getting too excited as house sales never do run smoothly but pleased to have got over the first hurdle!) . . . and now today OH's van in garage - making odd noise and it looks like it will be a write off as it will cost £1k to fix  . . . don't people know we've got a mortage to pay off!

Why is it always swings and roundabouts with us?

  • WoW! That's so cool to see it all laid out like that! Huge thanks to TG :T

I can't believe we're over a third of the way towards our target of £25k off the mortgage! :j Ok we're a looooong way off being mortgage free but it's great to see some real progress. We've just done another one of our informal "lets" to a visiting prof so will have some extra cash to throw at it for the next few months, particularly as we're switching to a not-quite-so-good rate so we might as well make hay while the sun shines :D

    Well done everyone!

We're off on our holiday of a lifetime to Tanzania in September but as off this month it's paid off so everything now goes towards our other plans (mortgage being one, but not the only one ;) ) Can't wait!

Really inspiring to read how everyone has there own strategies for reaching their MFi3 targets. I think it is fantastic that it is still going after 1 year and that many more people are now joining the MFW board.

I totally agree it is not about living on beans of toast etc it is about thinking each time you look at something do I need it do I want it and if yes can I get it cheaper elsewhere. We have the final decisions to make tomorrow for our bathrooms tiles etc and then it is go ahead 2nd week of May. I hope it won't affect our MFi3 dream but it is likely to cost £14k so will have to see. I can't wait though will be so nice to have a powerfull shower work.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAZ - hope you have had a lovely day xx
  • Happy Birthday from me too Kaz.

I went to the building society today and told them the exact day I wish to be mortgage free - 23rd May! They seemed a bit confused!.IT will be the day after pay day. They don't accept debit cards at that branch so decided to pay it off in cash - wonder if there will be a fanfare/balloons??? cream cakes?
