I know the feeling, 'oh great' quickly followed by 'oh sh*t' .

Better to be in the position of having a choice though :D

    OK, here's what you do:

Toss a coin in the air, heads you take it, tails you don't.
Ignore the result. Base your decision on what you instinctively want it to land on. Works every time. (Trust me, Im an auditor  )

    And well done :j :j :j :j :j :j :j :j
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

if they want you that much, explain about the extra expense etc etc and see if you cannot re-negotiate the salary plus moving expenses etc etc.

    well done x

There is a salary range quoted (but it's only 2.5k wide) so I could ask for the top of the pay bracket which would help a bit in that at least we could afford everything necessary on just my salary. And I could ask for relocation expenses as well but I'm not sure if such a thing exists for lowly post-docs!

I really do want to take the position but it means expecting DH to give up his job which he loves here and move, jobless to a much more expensive city in the hope he will find a new job soon. He said he would do it (cos he's lovely) but I feel kind of mean asking him to especially when really it makes no financial sense at all!

Oh and the job is only for 3 years. But then so is my husbands job here.

Hi Cupid, congrats on the job offer. Is there any way you could live apart until either your OH gets a job or until the end of the contract (though 3 years in an awfully long time).

My next contract is in London for 6 months (hopefully more) and I'll be looking to find a house share in Central London and will be travelling back home to Manchester each weekend. It's not an easy life, but you do what you have to do to get by. However, you have to make sure that the payback is worth it. For us, it means that I can earn twice as much than if I had a permie job back in Manchester. This allows us to pay down our mortgage quicker, but more importantly it means that my wife doesn't have to work and can really put the effort in with our youngest.

    Hi everyone,

Well done with the job offer Cupid. Nice to be in demand. Good luck with the new contract too DD.

I have just returned from a week's break in Sharm diving. It was great, but we did overspend by about £100!

On the MFi3 front, I have received my bonus cashback from Britannia and got £32 back from recycling my old mobile. I have also discovered that I was on emergency tax last year so hopefully I should get some cash back from HMRC.

The stooze pot is also up to £15k in the offset which is helping keep the interest down.

On a disappointing front, I have discovered my overpayments on the capital have bounced and been returned to my account! I will need to phone Britannia. I have a nasty feeling I won't be able to make these payments electronically - only over the counter, which is frustrating!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

DD, if I don't get the job in leeds, I think we will do what you suggest. So I'll look for a house share also while DH looks for a job in london, oxford or reading. Problem we have is that we wouldn't really be earning enough to keep two households running for any substantial length of time.
I hope your work in london goes well.

Angela, it's good your spending some money on nice holidays etc.

I find that now I can justify spending more on holidays and 'luxuries' I really enjoy because I am cutting back so much elsewhere. And seeing the mortgage reduce so much makes me feel like I deserve a little break.

    On my MFi3 front, it's down to 43782! :j I can't wait until it's below 40k - that'll be a big milestone and big party

I got promoted whilst on this challenge for exactly the same reason ( lucky to still live at home though ). The job pays about 15K more than my previous, and it means we are much better off and able to overpay more since my partner is also not working. To be honest I hate the job as it is really stressful and high pressure, but the payoff is seeing my sons development be far greater than most of his classmates.

We have our 2nd baby on the way, and have just found out it is a girl. My missus is having an ebay marathon at the moment as we have a loft full of excellent quality boy clothes. This will also mean she can't return to work for at least 4-5 years from now, so I am pretty much stuck in my job.

Once the mortgage is paid and my partner back in work, I will definately be on the hunt for a job I will enjoy.

Looking forward to the updates from everyone.

Congratulation Jonesy-Bonesy a little girl how lovely one of each. My sister had a boy first and when she was expecting again we were all hoping for a girl. There is something so sweet about pink baby clothes hopefully you will get shot of the blue and your wife can buy some lovely pink stuff.

Cupid_s Congratulation on the job, what a difficult decision to have to make. My DH and I spent 3 years living in different countries but I was at Uni so quite different really. Sounds like it is a job you really want and I guess the experience will be great for getting other jobs. I would say take the job and if it doesn't work out living apart then look for a new job. Good luck what ever you decide.

Also congratulation to DD for getting a new job, London that is a long way from you...and an expensive place to live.

No news really from me, still sorting out the final bits for the bathroom but the fitter has gone sick so he isn't going to start now until May. That gives me more time to save up. Up to £960 in profits from MatchBetting not bad in two months. Really enjoying it, feel strange now if I haven't got a bet one something.

Finally we are now 1 week from having completed the first year of this quest. Please send me your updates as soon as you have your mortgage balance as of 31st March 2008. Roll on year 2.......

  • Good luck with the new contract DD.

My OH was away from home for 4 months on contract last year. We bought webcams so that the children could 'see' him, give him their news of the day and say goodnight to him every night. It really helped the time to pass quickly and he didn't feel so remote.
