  • Let's be realistic here - regardless of what the estate agents, mortgage providers, and anyone else who stands to profit hugely from increasing house prices say, a property is ONLY ever worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

I think the likes of greedy estate agents (ok, not all estate agents, but a good many) and the rash of property shows on TV are actually to blame for putting figures into people's minds.

The reality is, if the interest rate has gone up, causing people to become nervous about borrowing more, then they are not going to pay the hyped up prices that have been set on properties.

As has been said, the problems start when people use the equity and extend their mortgages up to these prices.

I guess we can all be reassured that we all have at least some equity in our house that we have managed to realise by overpayments and so at least have some cushion with regard to house prices.

  • Just called in to say 'Hi' as I haven't posted for a while.

I've managed to get my mortgage down to £30k so I've reached my goal for this year, it seemed as if I'd never do it at times but I stuck at it. I've started mystery shopping too as work is quiet at the mo and the extra few quid soon builds up.

Christmas is sorted, even got the turkey in the freezer! Just the fresh bits to get, posted all overseas cards yesterday and got some asda cards to get me through January. Can't think of much else. The key to it all is organisation I think, I'm thinking beyond the new year as it is only a few weeks away anyway, I keep thinking that all the stuff in the shops will be on sale in a few weeks (ideal time to buy for next xmas!)

Good luck everyone...keep up the good work! :)

    Impressive, I am nearly there!

Not paying much off this month due to a mistake in accounts department at husband's work. Still ahead of plan though so today's total is a big round £5000 paid off so down to £105000. Lots of plans and budgeting in place to make sure that next year the total really starts to come down. We've definitely spent less on Christmas this year so this challenge has really helped stop us overspend. Hope everyone has a good month xx

Hi all, I hope you all aren't getting too set back in your challenges by christmas. I've bought almost all my presents so far using vouchers from testandvote, pigsback and lightspeed, and then I have £60 off quidco/ciao to cover others. Which is just as well with me not earning anything at all. Luckily people have realised this and aren't expecting very much. We've had some lodgers move in with us for a while as well, and so we're still managing to overpay by £136 a month. I received an updated statement from HSBC this morning and if we stay at the current overpayment rate we will pay off our mortgage ten years and 1 month early! With a projected interest saving of £20873.72! However I expect the interest saved value to soar pretty quickly as soon as we start earning money and can overpay more.

Talking of which I have a job interview on monday! I don't think for a minute I'll get it as I've not done a postdoc yet and they want someone who has but it'll be great for the interview experience if nothing else. If I did get it, it would be great as it sounds so interesting and the pay is excellent (for science anyway), but there would be problems as it's in birmingham and DH has just got a job here in leeds. Though we'd become mortgage free much quicker as we'd have to sell the house early in the new year!

I'm probably more worried than some of you regarding house prices, because our house has gone up in value by only about 5k since we bought. However we currently have 60k equity in our house, and savings of 8k so we would manage. It's our friends with 150k houses and 148k mortgages who would be in trouble.

Have I had a pampered day or what! This morning I went to my local college, Telford, and had my hair done (trim and double french plait ie down each side) and then this afternoon had my first of the full body massages. ;) The point of this is to suggest to those of you who are interested in such things or might purchase such things for one's friends/relatives that a trip to your local poly/college or whatever you call them wherever you are might save you and/or them £££££££'s.

Hairdressing for 1 college year £40
Beauty Treatments for 1 college year £75

So far I have had 3 haircuts, 1 perm, 1 all over tint, 1 streaks, and am booked for another tint and "purple" streaks next week.

I have also had 1 facial, 1 Indian head massage, 1 manicure, said all over body massage which is 1 of 3. On Friday I am having a pedicure, next Wednesday BM 2 of 3, next Thursday another Indian head massage and BM 3 of 3 the following week.

They are also having a little Christmas do thingy called "Jingle in the Spa" on 17 December with taster treatments including nails, massages and facials together with Christmas nibbles and refreshments, raffles etc etc. This is free to registered clients - like yours truly - and a mere £5 for Joe Public.

I'm told Stevenson College across Edinburgh also does this kind of thing but I don't have personal knowledge of this. Try yours if you dare:eek: Seriously, there's always a lecturer on hand throughout who can remedy just about anything - apart from sticking hair back on that is!

Hi Superfast Gran - can't stand by my bed because I wouldn't be able to reply!

You've let out a very well kept secret. I have taught part-time in adult education and they are really bad at promoting this sort of thing but well done for taking advantage.

At my local college they also have a catering school and they run a restaurant especially with theme nights were the students produce it all (under supervision), so if you can do all that which you've had and have a meal with it too that could top it all off.

Now sticking hair back in..... there's a big demand for that if you ever find out where to go.
