Defaults/potentially claiming compensation???

Firstly, sorry if this is in the wrong place. I don't really know where it would fit!
For 2 years now I've been unable to get any sort of credit, no joint accounts, no jobs in banking despite having friends who work there trying for me, unable to get a loan to consolidate my high APR car finance, can't go on the rent for our flat so I don't tie my partners credit rating with mine, can't get a mortgage, etc etc.
After looking at experian, this is because Orange mobile say I owe them £10 and defaulted. Which I'm pretty sure is impossible as:
It has literally taken me 2 years to realise this. I certainly did not receive any sort of correspondence about this.
But when I've called them, customer service said the account has been terminated and so they have no record of this. They transferred me to billing who said the same, they have no info on the account.
They said a 'credit rating department rep' would call me within 7 days. I assume they are digging through the archives to try to find any notice of this default.
My questions are:
Thanks
Joanne

After looking at experian, this is because Orange mobile say I owe them £10 and defaulted. Which I'm pretty sure is impossible as:
- The contract was around £25+ per month anyway, if there were charges for that month, they were added to that amount, not billed seperately
- I finished and cancelled my contract in the January, carried my number over to T Mobile in February (I had to ask Orange for the PAC code so I would assume I didn't owe them anything for them to close the account and I'm sure I wouldn't have left £10 outstanding for any reason)

My questions are:
- Has anyone else had an experience of this? Are they likely to have anything in this 'special department' before I get my hopes up?
- If they have messed up, will I be entitled to compensation? I read a case almost exactly the same here: http://www.legalbeagles.info/forums/showthread.php?32559-Orange-have-destroyed-my-Credit-Rating!
Thanks
Joanne

Not sure really what can be added to the thread you linked to though.
Orange should have records to support filing the default. If they haven't then they are on dodgy grounds data protection wise.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks very much for that link Fermi! It makes me feel a lot better knowing that it seems to generally be what happens with different companies too
