Mcafee renewal

My Mcafee susbscription is about to expire (I have tried AVG and Avst in the past) I like Mcafee so it stays.
However I have a new subscription code, but the blurb that comes with it suggests uninstalling my current install and then downloading the latest version.
Do I really need to do this? I'm semi certain that last time I just entered the code and my subscription was renewed, the code this time is a 16 digit alpha numeric (I can't remember the format last time round)
Any advice pointers would be great thanks in advance.

The founder hasn't been involved with the company for donkeys years.

@OP - Why not just try it? Worst that happens is that it is rejected by that version.

If they tell you to uninstall and then reinstall it then I would probably take their advice. McAfee is notoriously problematic and I really wouldn't want to cut corners.
(I used to have to look after a McAfee deployment in a large company, upgrades were always a complete PITA)
When uninstalling, it may be necessary to use the McAfee Removal Tool as many versions of McAfee shipped with broken uninstallers.
Personally I would uninstall it and then install something else, not AVG as it is terrible, but give the 30 day trial of NOD32 a try and see what you think of that. The problem with McAfee isn't it's user interface or intrusiveness, it's its inability to actually detect and stop most viruses that are currently in the wild.
And yeah I agree that the comments about John McAfee are a bit unfair. While it's funny to point out that the only thing McAfee ever removed was his neighbour, it should be pointed out that John McAfee was given the boot from his own company years ago. Judge the product on it's own merits... (hint: it's still terrible)0 -

My experience also!
So so sorry about unkind remarks about the founder but I never liked the whole set up, Mcafee always sounded like 'protection money'

Thanks folks, there is no option for me to enter the key code, so I will uninstall and re-load as per instructions.
Mcafee has worked fine for me on this machine without detriment and is what we use at work, the way I look at it is if it's good enough for my works machine it's gotta be good enough for my home machine :cool:0 -
The place I currently work at recently ditched McAfee in favour of Symantec. Thankfully I'm no-longer responsible for AV work, but I did pitch in at the satellite office I work at.
As part of the process, an offline scan using was run to clean up anything that McAfee may have missed, then Symantec was installed.
Here are some screenshots from the receptionist's PC.

Symantec isn't great. It really bogs down your PC's performance, same as McAfee does, however recent versions of Symantec/Norton have gotten pretty good at actually detecting and removing viruses.
I'd still rather go with NOD32 though, which has excellent detection rates and doesn't grind your PC to a halt.0 -
I've used McAfee for a while now. I don't have to do anything, just pay the renewal and the account just carries on. Phone them for a deal. I paid £97.50 for a four user licence lasting for 3 years on Total Protection. It works for me so happy enough with it:)0

The reason so many people on this forum complain about McAfee and advise against it isn't because it's hard to use, it's because it isn't actually very good.
It would be like employing a security guard. You think he's great, he is always nice and polite to you and your customers, turns up for work on time, never has a day off sick, but as soon as somebody actually tries to break into your building he just stands by and lets them right in.0
