New house isn't cable connected - what to do?

I'm moving house in a few weeks and have discovered my new property isn't wired up for Virgin Media. For the past four years I've enjoyed ultra fast download speeds with my cable modem linked on to the on-street cable network.
Now I need to think about ADSL and I've always thought it as being much slower. Can you be on the telephone and on the net at the same time with it?
I'd only see ADSL as a temporary move until Virgin wire up my street and for that matter I'm loathe to take a 12 month phone line rental deal - ideally I'd just be using my mobile and my Virgin cable modem in my new place.
Can anyone recommend
A) Cheaper line rental than BT's £11.99 (bearing in mind all I want is internet)
or
A line rental and ADSL combined provider giving good deals and good service?
Cheers

Why do you assume that your area will be cabled by Virgin within the next year? Unlikely unless you have more positive information!

No, stay with BT to keep your call provider and ISP options open.

Not generally recommended although others may disagree. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
