I am aware that it is the minimum term not the actual end of contract. i was puzzled about how the OP could just tell the provider to end the contract. When I asked Virgin about upgrading before next July, i was told firmly that it wasn't possible until 1 month before the end of the contract.

All points are valid:
1) Yes, I should check DDs, and yes, I could do that from abroad - but this is my process and my responsibility. Surely theirs is more important as they have a liability to all their customers?
2) Grumbler is right - I sorted the new phone before I left (about 3 days IIRC).
3) I'll let you know how the dispute progresses.

must admit to cancel you would've been told you need to pay X amouny prob 2 months monthly charge.

Also whats happened to the phone in meantime? Daughter hasn't used it still?

Sounds to me like the cancellation wasn't fully completed if you didn't get a contract settlement amount. Sucky.
