VOIP without PC turned on?

Do you think it could potentially stop incoming calls?0

I was also going to buy the PAP2 initially, but these ebay ones do not come with the ethernet cable or the phone adaptor which adds another £5-10 as you will have to get them separately (BexTech has pointed out that you can do a DIY job and make these for a few pounds). Go for the ebay NEW Netgear ones with 555 free minutes. The minutes alone are probably worth the extra £10! The Linksys ones are also recommended.
Below is a post I made a few days ago on the same subject :
I am using a Netgear TA612V for VoIP. It is a good bit of kit and comes with 555 free minutes from sipgate and a free incoming number. The best thing is that it can be unlocked so can be used with another provider after the minutes have finished. From sipgate it is £60. The current cheapest I have found recently is £45.00 on ebay but the guy below will sell for £37.50 off ebay if you ask him, which I did and bought off him or see if he will reduce the buy-it-now price. This means I no longer pay Virgin/Telewest £11 for line rental (although the Telewest line is still working and they are not charging me:D ) Buy the Netgear VoIP thingy, you will not regret it! I am saving a ton a month, best thing I ever did with my BB, as I hardly tend to use it otherwise!
hope that helps.0 -

No, the incoming calls would still come through, though may take a few seconds before the phone starts ringing. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Can anyone please explain in words of one syllable how this VOIP business works
I don't mean the technicalities but just so that a simpleton like me and probably quite a few others can understand what it is all about and how to set it up. I have a contract with BT so can't give it up just now. I do have a wireless router.I know how to use skype(computer to computer) but would like to be able to make calls to landlines and mobiles from anywhere in the house not just from the computer.I've just read all through this thread but got lost quite early on.0 -
Buy an adapter (ATA), plug in a cordless phone and make VoIP to PSTN or Mobile or other VoIP numbers.
Skype is proprietary so most people use real VoIP avoid Skype.
Other than an expensive device with Skype you need the PC on to make and receive calls.
With a SIP ATA you connect it to the router and connect a normal corded or cordless phone. Many VoIP providers issue you for no fee a local 01 or 02 number or one can be pointed for free to some services that don't issue them. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Companies like sipgate don't allow you to call 0844 numbers (for international calls), is there any way of getting round this, by using another company for example?0
-
If Sipgate don't offer low enough rates to the International destinations you require, then you could try the Betamax services such as VoIPCheap.com, VoIPStunt, SIPDiscount, VoIPDiscount and a few of their other services, a Yahoo/Google search for Betamax VoIP should give you a list. They don't allow access to 0844 numbers, but have many destinations free and from 1c/min.
Also you could register your Sipgate number on Call 18185, Call 1899 or Call 18866 and use their Non-BT 0808 access number and be charged at their rates from the Non-BT line. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... I've just received my pap2, with just the power on, the pap2 power light flashes blue, when i plug the router in then i get two blue lights, but the corresponding light on my router is orange and its usually green when I've attached my other computer to it. Also, I bought a US to UK adaptor at my local electronics shop for £1.50, have connected a phone and when I type in **** i get nothing. Ive tried using 2 different cables and two different phones, one a dect and the other a runofthemill cordy jobby (im a tech head eh?) but i cannot access the voice menu. I am using the same US to UK adaptor so maybe thats wonky?
I can access the pap2 menu via my browser but now Im stuffed, any ideas?
Cheers_________0 -
Edit: problem solved, dodgy adaptor._________0
