A related question, if you dropped your landline in favour of this, would you be able to transfer your existing VM (or BT) number to the VOIP to avoid having to change number?

    Many thanks

Some VoIP providers allow you (or at least attempt) to transfer your BT number (or originally BT number) to their VoIP service, I've not heard of VM numbers being able to be transferred yet.

Some don't state they do, but will give it a try if you ask, especially if their number provider routinely offers this service for other VoIP providers that do offer the service.

For example: Gradwell provide number porting, though they do have a monthly charge for their VoIP service.

I have used the GATE 101 from DigiDave and can confirm it works fine with Betamax VOIP provider (voipcheap.com).

I now use GATE 102 (also from DigiDave which is similar to 101 but supports incoming calls via PSTN which is what I required.

    Cheers from Mike

How have you found dialling plans, are you able to dial local numbers without any area codes or using 00441... when using these devices.

I've only really heard people who have issues with them, and then sell them on to get another brand of ATA.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
The GATE 101/102 ATAs have no dial plan functionality. Voipcheap.com in UK allow dialling without need for 0044... just dial e.g. 020 8xxxxxxx is enough to route the call correctly.

There is a technique to register VOIP adapter with voxalot.com (I think) and use dial plans as part of their service, still keeping e.g. voipcheap as one of your VOIP providers amongs others. However, I prefer to keep things simple for myself and simply use the one provider and no dial plan.

Right, the last time I used both VoIPCheap UK and COM sites you had to use 0044 etc, but have just tried them and they do now allow 01 / 02 dialling.

I had tried Voxalot sometime back, but there were too many issue for me, so dropped them, also meant I was around 24 hours without a phone service as their system tied my numbers down (the main ones I used).

I find the dial plans handy for translating one number to another, and not have to dial 0121 for Brum numbers, makes the system appear to anyone who uses it like a real landline.

Do you have an incoming number with VoIPCheap?

  • Has anyone tried this with voipcheap?

How do you use the mobile credit for the voip line?

If 2 lines are possible is that a feature of the hearware or the voip provider?

With VoIPCheap. VoIPStunt etc, you text a code to the number stated on your VoIP account and they will add credit and so many free days.

Two lines or more are a feature of the device (or software if using software). Though some VoIP providers do prevent having the service active on more than one line / PC.

The PAP2 comes with two lines, but you don't have to use 2, but can be handy if you want to make or receive 2 calls at the same time.

At the moment I have 3 phones connected to the one line and 1 phone connected to the other (was 2).

If you had 2 phones would you need to keep both base stations next to the PAP2 or could you keep one downstairs and one upstairs, as that's what I currently have?

If you want two phones on one line, you can have one downstairs and one upstairs, you need to wire in extensions similar to how you would from a normal line.

On line 1 I have a phone in the living room, phone in the bedroom and phone in the kitchen. All three phones ring when that line is called as they would a usual landline with extensions.

Currently I just have one phone on line 2, this I have next to my PC as an 'office' phone, I did have an extension off this in another room - but not at the moment.

If you wanted one phone on one line and the other phone on the other line, then you'd wire one to line one and using a long extension wire line two upstairs, this would mean you could make or receive a call on one phone whilst still being able to make and receive a call on the other.

Just think as each port on the PAP2 as a master socket where you can connect a phone or connect socket double/trebler and extension. Or you could take an RJ11 lead cut the one end off and wire it to a master socket (as long as the master socket isn't connected to the old BT/cable phone line) and run the system just like a normal phone line.

What would happen if you were downloading/streaming files at the time you recieved an incoming call or wanted to make an outgoing call?

Downloading isn't usually a problem, but can cause the audio to break up like a mobile in poor reception area, it is mostly if you are heavily uploading that there can be a problem with the call breaking up to the other person, if you often upload might be worth setting a cap on the max you allow it to upload.
