Any other bank etc always asks for photographic id, im more than happy to show them likewise with the nationwide but they refused to look at it.

I don't have a new-style photo driving licence nor a current passport, so I don't have photo ID. This has not been a problem with any bank or building society that I have opened an account with in the last six years.

As Tori Bellatrix found, photo ID items are on their list of acceptable documents but other things are accepted which mean that photographs are not required.
  • I opened my flex account online and was asked to provide proof of address and identity in branch before they sent out any log on details etc.
my partner opened an account in branch was asked for the same so maybe it was poor training on the part of the staff ?? suggest you bring it to attention of the branch manager first

Halifax ask for Birth certificate and proof of address if you are not already a customer.

birth certificates can only be used for under 18's at Halifax

for name they can take, for example:

~original letter confirming right to benefits
    ~photographic driving licence
    ~paperbased driving licence
    ~passport / residence permit
~debit or credit card from another bank (not if providing bank statement as address)

does not have to be photographic

They also ask for birth certificates for over 18's. I was with my neice who was 19 at the time.

She was not in receipt of benefits, she doesn't drive and she only had a passport and a savings account book. They refused to open an account for her without seeing her birth certificate and proof of her address (they would accept a bill to parents providing they countersigned it).

it is not permitted to take birth ceritifcates over age of 18 - that would be a an AML fail

sounds like they used the passport and then the parents adress id

To clarify no they never seen any of my documents that i had with me passport and bill, i find it strange, i don't feel safe giving my money to a building society who can't even be bothered to validate people, my name, address is easily acessable from the internet.

Im not too fussed, i am happy with halifax, i only wanted to be with the nationwide because they have no fee for withdrawing abroad, think ill stick to good old travellers cheques.
Baby number 2 due April 2010, were having a girl!!! :j

Ditto...I had to provide proof of ID and address last week after successfully applying online. Only want it for spending abroad. Very nice lady that took the photocopies too.
  • Some banks now use Electronic Id and address verification.
If you pass this no photo id or address confirmation is required.
