Ever just want to pull your hair out??

Well its that time of year again, the tree is up, the presents are 'part' wrapped, the food is gradually getting bought, its 6 days to christmas and my husband has asked me the yearly question I dread . . .

'so what do you want for christmas?'

Now firstly i'd like to say that I do have a list of things I would like to get BUT Dh and I have very different ideas of what is considered a gift. He will not buy:

Clothes (everyones elses wardrobe comes out of the house budget so mine should too)
Jewellery (because he might get the style wrong and I dont want to pick as I dont see the point in wrapping it up after IYSWIM :o)
Anything kitchen related (this is a bugbear of mine as I love to cook but again its a 'house' item :()
Christmas scenes for the fireplace (again a passion of mine, but in his eyes a house item as its used to decorate the house :rotfl:)
Tickets to anything/meals out (in his eyes this is something we do as our monthly 'couple' outing thing so its not really a gift :o)
A Terramundi (well i'd just save for house stuff in it wouldnt I :rotfl:)
Hair Straightners (Well a hair cut isnt a gift so neither is any hair related accessory )
Hair cut/colour (as above)

He says that a gift should be for me alone, so something hobby related preferably, my only other hobby is crafting and tbh im inundated with the stuff, he bought me a lovely storage box last year (which I love btw) and is talking about buying another one this year as hes that stuck, but I dont need another one, plus its now a case of i'll know what it is so whats the point :o

He cant get chocolates (nut allergy and tbh the family eat every box I get anyway), any kind of spa/experience day type thing is a no as im disabled and tbh would be my idea of torture, weekend away is well out of budget/to difficult to arrange with 2 kids/wouldnt be 'just for me' *rolls eyes*, got hundreds of pictures of the kids and not really a 'portrait' person . . .

So what the heck do I say? why cant I have some nice new kitchen scales, or the hair straightners ive been going on about for the last 2 years? Please people what actually constitutes a 'real gift'??

  • i think a gift is something which has thought put into it, it might be something which you'd like but perhaps for whatever reason, you can't justify buying it for yourself.

so, the £400 KitchenAid is something i'd really love to have, but i can't justify spending that amount on me at the moment!

This is me!! I would love a pair of Very expensive straightners but cant afford the price tag they come with, but DH doesnt agree as its a 'house' item :rotfl:. . im sure he wont be upset when he unwraps the blu ray DVD player ive bought him for his computer tower (which hes been moaning he wants for the last 6 months), though the kids use his computer so doesnt that make my gift a 'house' gift too? :rotfl:.

He wont even just give me the money as 1) he has done this before and I did get a tad upset about the lack of effort while they all sat and opened all the carefully thought out and bought gifts I had obtained through the year :o and 2) id just use it for house stuff or even worse FOOD SHOPPING :rotfl:

    PS: ooooooooooo kitchen aid *drools*

  • I think hair straighteners are a great gift, my partner bought me some the first year we were together and there still going strong. I use them everyday and I don't think I'm alone in saying that having a good hair day does give you a little bit of extra self confidence! Surely that's a better gift than something you may never use? :)

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Do you think he might take offence? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

He's just driving me mad, why ask what I want if your then going to say I cant have any of it because its not your idea of a gift? surely the reason for asking is to find out my idea of a gift, and a nice new electric carving knife would be lovely as someones nicked one of the blades out of my old one and im now cutting chicken with a bread knife :rotfl:. I wouldnt mind so much, but its not like im going to go out and buy any of these 'house' related items myself so im just going to go without :rotfl:.

What about books? Have you got an Amazon wishlist that he could get from? (Have to get his skates on, or buy from a shop) I've chosen some great crafty books for my hubby to get me :D

  • It does sound quite frustrating (after all, it's really for you to say what gift would please you, and you have given him plenty of ideas!) ... but it's actually quite sweet that he thinks all the above are everyday necessities that should come out of general funds, whereas I think many men would take a very different view!

Could you give him a general idea of the sort of jewellery you like, for example, or get a female relative to help him choose?

  • How about music in some form (CD or MP3) , or a course in a craft you're interested in? DVDs of the sort of film you and no one else in the family would enjoy?

I give enough to charity, I dont think I need to add my one christmas present to the list as well. A new knife would actually make a 'real difference' in my life as the pain caused from using a bread knife is not pleasant and I dont see why my husband cannot add one item to my possessions just because theres a monkey dancing in china. This thread is not to make people feel bad about recieving a gift, it was a light hearted bit of fun about a quirk of my husbands.

Have a bookshelf full of books (and a bedroom and 2 bathrooms) so when suggested that he said 'not on your life!' :rotfl:

I'm wearing a lovely necklace he and my mum went halves on a few years ago (that mum picked ;)) and the pair of earrings he bought me for my birthday (that I picked :rotfl:) which I pointed out to him and he said 'yes but if I had picked them they would have been much bigger and blingier as whats the point of having them if you cant see them' :rotfl:

It is sweet and for the other 364 days of the year I love him for it. :D
