...and to compare apples with apples one of the biggest draws on resources in a distro is the selected desktop environment (DE) - Gnome, Mate, Cinnamon, KDE, xfce, lxde inter alia.
That's why I specifically recommended Mint with xfce.

lubuntu! really light weight AND is a official ubuntu distro, it can run on 128mb of ram (although it is slow) but runs just fine on 256mb ram and aboveDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
@OP
I would recommend you give the various distros a quick try as live CD/DVD to see what you would get on with in terms of speed, ease of use and apps you need and then decide which one to install.604!0 -
Mint 13 with xfce is what I'm running...it's a nice OS, and behaves more "windows-like" than other distros, which is in itself handy for a linux novice (of which I am one, in all honesty

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I am downloading Mint 14 xfce now - which should be OK (The laptops are a minimum 1Ghz processor with 512Mb / 1Gb RAM so should fly.....)
What I am concerned about is the similarity (or lack of..) with Ubuntu - which I am fairly used to.... ??0 -

Again that depends on which aspect of Ubuntu you like or don't like. As I've already said the look, feel and usability of Linux is virtually infinitely configurable.
For example a Windows 8 user might get on with the Ubuntu Unity GUI whereas a traditional Linux user would probable hate it.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Windows user, I found Mint pretty easy to pick up and use productively, albeit only web-browsing, music, moving files around and accessing them which I found was more akin to Windows than ubuntu, and probably why I didn't get on too well when I tried ubuntu before settling on Mint

I have used Windows from version 3 (back in about 1992) so feel confident that I can cope with most issues - but discovered Ubuntu a few months ago and quite like it - it is so much faster than Windows (of any flavour) - so am quite looking forwards to this ....0

Twinkle, you sound similar to me in a way....so I don't think you'll be disappointed with Mint
