Ubuntu Light - advice request.

Has anyone managed to use Puppy Linux as an installed operating system or does it only boot from the media ?
I am trying to find a low resource Ubuntu - that will install and run quickly on a low spec PC - any suggestions ?

Puppy is an excellent choice for older slower machines. I've only ever used it from a cd or stick, but the puppy forums will have plenty of advice on installing. Step-by-step here:-

To make bootup quicker from cd/stick, if you're using it on the same machine, let puppy create a save file on the hdd on exit, this will save settings, network connections, etc

Not used any other specifically small distros, but I've installed puppy onto a stick without any problems - what's not happening for you ??

This is one of the links on the main page I gave you, it's step-by-step with screenshots......should work without any problems, it's almost the same as installing it onto a stick ;)

Mint's not exactly that small though, and needs a lot more system resource than Puppy....

  • xfce de is pretty light on resources - plus target is a school laptop.

    Otherwise TinyCore :)

Maybe I should have explained better - We have a few low spec laptops, and rather than dispose of them - I am trying to make use of them by installing Ubuntu/Linux - rather than booting from a USB stick, I am trying to install the OS on the HDD !!
I have tried Ubuntu 12 .*(full install) and was disappointed with the speed !!
  • Mint xfce min req:

    System requirements:
    x86 processor (for both 32 & 64-bit versions)
x86_64 compatible processor (for the 64-bit version)
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
5 GB of disk space for installation
Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution
    CD-ROM drive or USB port

Both Puppy and Mint can be run either from cd/dvd/USB stick OR by installing onto the computer's hdd....this laptop is dual-boot Win7 and Mint Linux, for example, you just select which OS you want to boot into just after the BIOS splash screen....

The step-by-step instructions for puppy should work if followed correctly - note in there that it does tell you that you will have to sort your settings out twice initially (once to get up and running, then again on the first boot from the hdd after installing) and then that's it, good to go with settings saved !!

Both Puppy and Mint will be quicker than ubuntu on the same hardware, Puppy should be the quickest of the three ;)
