Can anyone help me please? My laptop has frozen on "Windows is shutting down". It has been like it for about three hours. I had the wizard for find new hardware running and couldn't stop it. I then went to turn off computer and clicked, it got as far as window is shutting down and nothing else has happened. If I took the battery out would this solve it or would I be doing damage? Any information welcome. Thanks in advance.

The only way would be to hold down the power button for a few secs and it will shut down.0 -

Just did that and it worked!! Obviously didn't hold it down long enough before. Thanks for your help.0

yeh, 5 seconds is usual for atx boards and laptops.
Of course, it'd be nicer if windows would shutdown properly from time to time (something they haven't quite fixed even in Vista)Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0
