Help needed

Can anyone help me please? My laptop has frozen on "Windows is shutting down". It has been like it for about three hours. I had the wizard for find new hardware running and couldn't stop it. I then went to turn off computer and clicked, it got as far as window is shutting down and nothing else has happened. If I took the battery out would this solve it or would I be doing damage? Any information welcome. Thanks in advance.

The only way would be to hold down the power button for a few secs and it will shut down.

Just did that and it worked!! Obviously didn't hold it down long enough before. Thanks for your help.

yeh, 5 seconds is usual for atx boards and laptops.

Of course, it'd be nicer if windows would shutdown properly from time to time (something they haven't quite fixed even in Vista)
